This is a full-featured kitchen scale. It displays food weights in grams or pounds and ounces, and calculates liquid volumes by weight in both milliliters and fluid ounces. The scale has a relatively small footprint--a little less than 6"x9", and it is about 1/2" tall. The top of the scale is stainless steel, with a blue LED display and touch-controls. The scale has a capacity of 5 kg, which is a bit more than 10 lbs. It has an easy to use Tare function which allows accurate weighing of substances in containers or additions. It runs on 4 AAA batteries and shuts down automatically after 4 minutes with no activity. It was designed for the German market and was made in China.

For its price, this is quite an impressive piece of kitchen equipment. I compared it with a laboratory scale to test its accuracy and precision and found that its reported measurements were always within 5 g of the true weights. Although it reports measurements down to 1 g, it is not very accurate at that weight (70% error in my tests), but from 10 g on up, it was very, very close. At heavier weights, the reported measurements were as much as 4 g off, but this was less than 1% error. Using the Tare function did not affect accuracy, nor did placing items on the margins of the scale rather than in the center. The battery compartment on the bottom of the scale is easy to access and open. The touch sensor controls take a few minutes to get used to, but seem to work well. Overall, this is a high-quality, classy-looking, easy-to-use kitchen scale--highly recommended.

I'm a pastry chef, so a good scale is important to me. I purchased this scale partly based on the good reviews.
I did love using it, the features were great. Unfortunately, something was wrong with this item internally, I kept getting a "low battery" display even though I replaced the batteries, twice in a few weeks. The last time, it wouldn't even turn on. I ordered a replacement just the other day. The replacement kept shutting off immediately after turning it on. I'm returning both, and I'll have to find a different brand, what a disappointment.

I've had this scale for almost three months now, and I love it. It's a handy little tool in so many ways. You can set it to measure dry weight or liquid weight in either lbs./oz. or grams/ml. This is especially nice for conversions. Weigh it up in ounces and then switch the scale to metric to find the equivalent.

The instructions are mostly in pictures rather than words, and it couldn't be easier to use. Even without instructions you could probably figure it out just by experimenting. The TARE function is nice so you can zero out the weight of your measuring container (bowl, cup) before measuring whatever goes in it.
If the scale is sitting flat with nothing on it and isn't registering zero weight, you can also press TARE to make it show zero again.

The scale uses four AAA batteries(included), and it has a "Lo" battery indicator. It also shuts off automatically after four minutes, so you don't waste your batteries. I timed it for review purposes, and it really does shut off after four minutes.

The scale has about the same dimensions as a steno pad, which for me is one of its best features. It's so small I can slip it in a narrow drawer with some other gadgets. Even if I leave it sitting on the counter it's not in the way.
It's a small unit with a large capacity -- up to 11 lb./5 kg dry weight and 175 fl. oz./5000 ml liquid weight.

It is made in China, but it comes with a five-year warranty from a reputable German company.

The Soehnle 66171 is a nice unit. It has a striking futurist/minimalist design with brushed stainless steel face. With frequent use, that face will probably get scratched up, but, in its pristine state, it looks exquisite. This kitchen scale is compact and quite easy to use. The multi-language instruction sheet shows you in pictorial fashion what you need to know, which isn't all that much, really. The Soehnle weighs in grams, ounces, milliliters or fluid ounces, and handles up to 11 pounds. One wonders whether 11 pounds of anything will be held adequately by this tiny unit, but I'd say that most of what you'd weigh in the kitchen would amount to much less than that. The "Sensor-Touch" screen requires almost no pressure to use, and my tests with various items show that the Soehnle is quite accurate. (The usual "Not Legal For Trade" disclaimer seems to contradict this.) Four AAA batteries are included, and they are of the usual unfamiliar Chinese brand. Nevertheless, it's nice not to have to get batteries separately. The only complaint I have with the 66171 is that the digital display, with its blue characters, seems a little dim. But perhaps my 55-year-old eyes are failing me...

Soehnle is a German company, but the 66171 is, of course, made in China. At its $49.99 MSLP, it's certainly not the least expensive scale of its type, but it is a quality product, and should provide years of trouble-free use. Soehnle's five-year warranty on this scale inspires buy it!

Okay. Perhaps that's overstating it a bit, but never having had a kitchen scale like this before led me to test a few things. Such as seeing what the 39 grams of sugar in a can of Coke actually looks like when it's sitting in a dry heap.

It's big. Too big. It'll make you think twice about downing that second can when you're really thirsty; in fact, it'll make you think twice about finishing the first! So in that respect, this scale (or any accurate scale, for that matter) could keep you healthier. ;-)

The SOEHNLE is both accurate and sensitive. I tested it using a single dime, and not only did the dime register, its weight (2.3 grams) was right on par with what a dime is supposed to weigh.

I also like the fact that the scale has a "tare weight" button. For those who don't know what this is, it's the ability to zero out the weight once you've set a container on top. It works like this: Say you have four different dry ingredients to dump into a bowl. Set the bowl on top, and once the bowl's weight registers, press the "TARE" button. Whatever the weight of the bowl was is now set to zero. Add your first dry ingredient. When you've added enough to come to the amount you need, press the TARE button again. Now both the weight of both the bowl and the first ingredient read zero. You can do this over and over again, and you never have to keep track of the overall total.

Also, the SOEHNLE just looks cool, with its brushed stainless steel finish and blue LED readout. It's also quite slim, and fits very nicely in a drawer, taking up very little space. There are four rubber pads on the bottom; given our granite counter tops it makes for a completely non-skid appliance.

Finally, the scale will read out in grams; pounds/oz; as well as liquid measurements.

All in all, a great addition to the kitchen.

- Jonathan Sabin
