4.0 out of 5 stars Attractive, simple, and works fine.
The scale does everything you'd expect from a nice digital scale, and looks as good as the picture. The controls could not be much simpler -- there's only one button! -- and the display is exceptionally clear and easy to read, with big black numbers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks similar, but not the same!
While this item looks very similar to the Soehnle scale that won "America's Test Kitchen" honors, note that this scales's capacity is only 4 lbs, whereas the previous scale won partially because of its 11 lb capacity.

On the plus side, this scale is about $30 cheaper, and just as good looking. On the down side, there appears to be no direct replacement for...

The scale does everything you'd expect from a nice digital scale, and looks as good as the picture. The controls could not be much simpler -- there's only one button! -- and the display is exceptionally clear and easy to read, with big black numbers.

The only negative for me is that one button is actually too few. The machine tries to guess whether you mean "set zero" or "turn off" depending on when you push the button, so it can take more than one try to turn it off. And to change between grams and ounces requires turning the machine over and removing a rubber cover to get to a truly hidden switch. Simplicity is great, but they took it a bit too far.

I use this scale for everything from baking to mailing and it is extremely accurate. It looks like art, works like a dream and is very easy to clean. You can turn it on, set a bowl on it and zero it out then fill to desired weight, very easy to use. Great for measuring out precise amounts of bread dough for very even sized rolls. Great for gram weight when mailing a letter or anything light weight that requires a precise weight. You will love it as much as I do, I'm sure of that!

On the plus side, this scale is about $30 cheaper, and just as good looking. On the down side, there appears to be no direct replacement for last years 11lb model (Edit: The Soehnle 66524 is a similar design and handles 11lbs)

An accurate scale that looks good. The base is aluminum looking plastic, while the scale tray is good quality glass. For $100 I expected an aluminum base. If you do need to change the units from US to metric, removing the rubber base and finding a knife or other sharp instrument to move the selector is fiddly and annoying.

4.0 out of 5 stars WOW, what a beauty!, April 14, 2005

This review is from: Soehnle 66522 Futura Digital Food Scale, 4 Pound 6 Ounce Capacity (Kitchen)
When I bought this scale from amazon, I couldn't quite picture how big it was, and I was afraid it was going to be too large (I have a very small apartment kitchen). When it arrived, I was very pleased on several levels--first, it is really compact and sleek; second, that it is even more beautiful in person than it was in the picture; and third, because of the open base, it is hangable! (Not to say that the manufacturer would RECOMMEND hanging it but that it's design makes that possible.)

The scale now has a place of honor on the wall next to my stove, along with my Henckel magnetic knife rack and my stir fry pan. When you have a tiny space, you have to make use of every available inch...and that includes the walls! :)

I have not used the scale a great deal yet but love it already. The only criticism I have, and perhaps my package was just missing something, is that the only instructions I got is a series of pictures in multiple languages. You've GOT to be kidding! I was so turned off by this that I just put down this so-called "instruction" sheet and turned on the scale...just one button and easy to use. Still, some text instructions for switching from pounds to grams, cleaning, etc. would have been nice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, best if you don't switch units often, March 19, 2007

This review is from: Soehnle 66522 Futura Digital Food Scale, 4 Pound 6 Ounce Capacity (Kitchen)
This scale works as advertised, is relatively compact, and is very easy to use (only one button!). It suffers from one design flaw mentioned in other reviews: the grams<->ounces conversion is a slider switch hidden in the back of the battery compartment. It is almost impossible to switch by hand, so if you find yourself using mixed units, this is not the scale for you.

Pros:
1) Accuracy is good
2) Very compact
3) Easy to clean
4) Easy to use

Cons:
1) Difficult to switch between English and metric units
2) Turning off requires a bit of patience (I just let it auto-off)

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad Buttons, Short Battery Life, November 25, 2005
This review is from: Soehnle 66522 Futura Digital Food Scale, 4 Pound 6 Ounce Capacity (Kitchen)
Beautiful to look at, BUT, I agree with other reviewers that buttons are difficult to operate and don't even work sometimes, plus be prepared to change batteries every few months--ridiculous for something that uses TWO lithium batteries and is not in heavy, or even everyday use!

This scale works OK. It does what it says and works fine. However, the on/off button especially the off button does not always work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice while it lasted!, April 19, 2009
This review is from: Soehnle 66522 Futura Digital Food Scale, 4 Pound 6 Ounce Capacity (Kitchen)
I was quite happy with this scale when I first received it. I rarely use metric, so the inconvenient conversion switch was not a problem. It also seemed quite accurate. But within a few months I began to have trouble with it malfunctioning. Usually, if I switched it off for a few minutes, it would be fine when I switched it back on. I wasn't the battery, because I got a new one for it. It lasted a few more months then began to give me an error reading every other time I used it. Again I bought a new battery, but to no avail. Eventually it would only give me an error reading. Forget about trying to contact Soehnle! I ended up just throwing it out. It lasted less than a year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice digital scale, July 19, 2008

This review is from: Soehnle 66522 Futura Digital Food Scale, 4 Pound 6 Ounce Capacity (Kitchen)
I bought this scale because Alton Brown recommended it in several of his books and on his old web site. This was back in mid 2004. It still has the original battery in it. I don't know how people can be complaining about battery life. It turns itself of automatically after 2 minutes of idle time.

I love this scale because it is very accurate and easy to use. One button controls everything.

I have only a couple complaints:
1. The rubber cover on that button got a crack in it not long after I got it. This MAY have been due to the fact that it went through several moves after I got it.
2. I wish there was an easier way to switch from grams to ounces. It would be nice to be able to do it on the fly. You have to turn the unit off and open a rubber cover on the bottom to switch it from one mode to the other. It's a simple little slide switch.

Since I started using it, I decided it was best to just keep it on the metric setting because it's so much easier to do the math when dividing stuff (I'm really good at math, but it's still a pain to the sixteenth thing all the time, why get a calculator out when you can do tenths in your head?).

The other nice thing about this scale is that it looks good enough to leave it out on the counter all the time.

Most of the time, I use this for making bread, so I don't need the 11 pound capacity that people seem to need. When (and if) I ever need that capacity, I won't hesitate to get that cool looking three legged model that Soehnle sells.
