Converting from grams to lbs. is hugely inconvenient, so if you use both European and US recipes alot or even occassionally, this is not the scale for you. You have to remove the bottom rubber piece then use a pointed object to move a switch way in the back of the compartment. Otherwise, a very nice scale, but we returned ours. We had a scale in Europe that was very accurate and switched at the touch of a button. If Swiss engineering is so fantastic, why didn't they include a g/lb. button.

We have used ours at least five times a day for the last three months and it still works fine. Seems to this engineer to be rather well built.
The single button is used for on/off and tare (re-zero after placing a container on the scale). It takes a little time to get used to one multi-function button, but it becomes quite intuitive. The button is sealed with neopreme, not plastic.
Another nice feature is that the glass shelf lifts off for cleaning.
I always try to say *something* negative for balance. Best that I can come up with is that the rubber seal on the underside is sorta flimsy.

[edit] Nine months later, still works just fine, averaging about 3 uses a day.

I bought this based on a comparison of digital kitchen scales in Cook's Illustrated (hope its OK to mention that).I have been using it at least weekly, mostly for measuring baking ingredients (fractions of an ounce up to several pounds). Its very easy to use. The location of the digital window makes it easy to see the numbers, even when I have a large bowl on the scales. As another reviewer noted, its awkward changing between English and metric measurements and the instructions aren't terribly clear. You have to peel back a rubber cap and move a slide switch. but I use lbs. and ounces nearly all the time. The scale does shut off after a period of inactivity (maybe 20 seconds), which saves the battery. Pressing the center button zeroes the reading (equivalent to adjusting an analog scale for the weight the empty bowl), so I can add successive items to the same bowl, instead of having to empty it each time. I have had the scale about 1 year now, and have had no problems that I can know of with the accuracy. I really like this product. It makes baking a lot easier.

I purchased this scale last summer and found it to be very accurate and very easy to use. However after a couple of months of daily use the accuracy started to diminish to the point that the unit became unuseable. I tried a new battery with no results. I suspect that the unit would be fine for the casual 1 or 2 times a week use....

As a cake decorator I am constantly measuring things. I received this scale as a Xmas gift and it is one of the best gifts I ever received! You can zero the scale at any time which makes it easy to keep adding ingredients without using all the bowls in the house.

I also use it in my office to weigh packages. I then go to the post office website and can figure my own postage without going to the post office and waiting in line. I put the correct postage on my package and hand it to the postal carrier.

I highly recommend this scale for any use you can think of!

After a few months use, accuracy is a hit-and-miss ordeal. I have come to the conclusion that increased use makes this unit increasingly inaccurate. Started out O.K., but has degraded to the point where I cannot trust it's reading.

I gave it one star just as a nod to it's looks; otherwise, it's become worthless after only a few month's moderate use. There are a lot better scales out there for just a little more $ -- that's where I'm going!

I purchased my Soehnle scale many years ago, and have used it three times daily the entire time. It delivers precisely what is promised, and has stood up to years of consistent use. I have replaced the batteries only once. If you are seeking a great kitchen scale that works in grams or ounces, this is it.

I originally purchased this scale when I decided to go on a diet and needed to weigh all my food. Since it has arrived I've used it for that AND for weighing my mail. I send anywhere from 5-10 packages a week to pen pals and this scale is very precise and easy to use. It is durable and, so far (I have had it since February, 2002), extremely accurate. Compared to other food scales I have looked at and those I have tried, this one is the best. While it is a bit hefty in price, if you need a good quality scale that you will use often, then I definitely recommend splurging on this one!

If only you could easily switch from grams to ounces

I loved the look and the capabilities (easy to read, accurate and large measurement range) but when it came down to it my husband hated note being able to switch from grams to ounces easily. We must measure the coffee beans in grams! It had to go back. We have a Salter now. It isn't as cool looking but it does the job.
