My two daughters (ages 3 and 5) really love the new Sofia The First: Once Upon a Princess TV Movie that came out on Disney Channel at the end of 2012. It is a cute story with cute characters. I would say it is geared towards younger, Disney Junior age kids due to the simple story and ages of the main characters. The story introduces the King and new Queen (Sofia's mother), Sofia and her new Stepbrother and Stepsister, the Fairies who teach at Royal Prep Academy (Sofia's new school), the Castle Sorcerer (the bumbling bad guy), and several other characters. There is minor, Disney style conflict with the new stepsister and the castle sorcerer which gives the story a great plot. Cinderella even makes an appearance to help the newest Disney Princess.

When we saw this book, we snatched it up for Christmas for our youngest. She really loves the book. We have been reading it every night. She sings the songs from the show when we get to the corresponding part in the book.

As for the book. It is illustrated wonderfully. The art looks great and very similar to the art in the TV Movie. The storyline is also a great adaptation of the TV Movie. It is much more brief than the movie as expected, but it hits all the major plot points perfectly. Fine details and extra scenes are excluded for brevity, but the story in the book doesn't feel like it is missing anything at all. It is the perfect length for a bedtime story and a good reading book for the 5 year old age range. It is done very well.

Sofia The First items are relatively scarce at the moment since the main TV Series hasn't come out yet, but this is a great first Sofia book for your Disney collection. Highly recommended.

My 4 year old princess-obsessed daughter just received this book today for her birthday. She's eagerly looking forward to the release of the cartoon and this book was a perfect surprise. It's a cute story wonderfully illustrated. It doesn't have the generic feel that some of the illustrations in Disney princess books possess. This one is very, very well done. The story held the attention of myself and my 6, 4, and 2 year old girls equally. 3 enthusiastic thumbs up for Sofia the First!!

We know the story from the movie, however there are many pages with words missing in this book. We are very disappointed.

My just-turned-3-year-old daughter absolutely LOVES Sofia the First and this book is a regular request. It follows the storyline of the Sofia the First pilot episode "movie" that covers the story of Sofia's mom marrying King Roland, and Sofia moving into the castle, starting at a new school, and having to transition. A few plot points from the movie are skipped, but overall it's well done. The paper quality is wonderful (lustrous, not matte) and the illustrations are beautiful. She has a lot of the pages memorized and often tries to "read" this book to herself. Your little girl will love this book -- it's well worth the money! (And in my opinion it's the best of the Sofia hardcover books.)

I seldom read to the end a book with such a disconnected storyline. Sofia's mother marries a king who has a daughter. This makes for a step-daughter and step-siblings situation. Sofia is to be at a ball to be held in her honor, but she doesn't know how to dance. No problem: Briefly enters Cedric, a sorcerer, to cast a magic spell to help her out, but the incantation seems to flop. Next, magically appears Cinderella--what justifies her injection into the story I can't figure out. The next incongruity is Sofia complaining that her step sister--the king's blood-related daughter--doesn't like Sofia, though no evidence of this is in the preceding storyline. The next thing we know--things happen fast in this story with no detail--the two sisters are searching the magician's/sorcerer's workshop for a book on magic spells. Come on, these are little tots who probably can't read! Finally, Sofia--through magic--dances wonderfully at the ball: All too unbelievable. And what does the king, her stepfather, praise Sofia for? "Having a good heart," he exclaims. What is this latter idea based on? Certainly nothing in the story. This is a haphazard jumble of a story. Fortunately, the illustrations are great.

Picture Book: Fantasy (Grades K-1)--Actually, not a recommended read

This book is perfect for all those little girls who fancy themselves as princesses. The story line is child friendly along with carrying a message about having a kind heart. But what is absolutely stunning is the drawings by Grace Lee rendered with very little background. Sophia and her sisters have large dazzling blue eyes that little girls love. Added to the charm of the story is the appearance of Cinderella herself.
