5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely beautiful
I only used to know The Chills from a radio hit from long time ago, and picked this cd up for a good price while on a holiday in thailand, but i keep coming back to it again and again..its just.. the melody...

1.0 out of 5 stars Painfully sappy pop
Shameful detritus. I was really hoping I'd enjoy this album--I'd liked what I'd heard of the Chills while squating with some New Zealanders in London... but this is woefully bad pop: unoriginal and pointless. Maybe some of their other work is better. Later, I realized that my Kiwi mates had introduced me to The Clean--a great band!

I got it when it came out 8 years ago and I'm listening to it right now. Martin Phillips is one of the great voices. Some may say that there is excess on this cd but so what (you could always program out the ones you don't like). The songs still rock: Background Affair, Soft Bomb, Double Summer....check out "Song for Randy Newman, etc." "men like Wilson, Barrett, Walker, Drake." A classic.

I still remember when my one of my friends slapped this on one day after he'd been living in Dunedin for a month or so. I took it back to my mates in Christchurch and it was foreverafter a favorite. There's some cheesiness, but it's some of the coolest ever NZ music, I'm onto my 4th copy of this now after friends pinching it off me.

4.0 out of 5 stars my "band of the year" for 2003, August 3, 2004

i just can't help but love these guys. (well, that's not totally true, their most recent album, _sunburnt_ is pretty not-so-hot). but everything up until that one has pleased me to no end. some of the best tracks from this album could have fit on their masterpiece, but sadly, there are a few too many duds here. there is something of a nautical, out-at-sea type of theme here, and that helps some. basically, the good tracks are great, and the less-good tracks kinda trip the album up. at 17 songs, it's certainly too long and could have used an impartial editor.

Like REM except it makes you think. Great melody, head-tapping tunes and lyrics that are a little different. Great stuff from an honest band from New Zealand.
