5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful Guide for New Owners
This book is much better than most breed specific guides in that the entire book appears to have been written specifically about Wheatens, not just a few chapters fitted into an all-purpose book. And the author knows her subject very well. The book includes a lot of practical information on training, feeding, grooming, even breeding and showing a Wheaten Terrier...

And the author knows her subject very well. The book includes a lot of practical information on training, feeding, grooming, even breeding and showing a Wheaten Terrier. It also has many beautiful color pictures. I highly recommend it for those interested in this wonderful breed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has really helped this beginner!, December 14, 2001
This review is from: Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I've had my wheaton puppy for a week and read this book a week before bringing him home. I must say this week has gone a lot easier for me by reading this book.

I have other puppy training books but this one has been the most helpful as it focuses more on the needs and traits of this breed. Also, the book is small and the writing gets to the point which makes it a handy "field manual". I have referred to it numerous times in the past week and it will probably see more use in the coming years than most any book on my bookshelf.

This book is just perfect. Though our Wheaten Terrier is not our first dog and not our first Terrier, we still learnt a lot of new stuff helping us to raise this dream dog.

This book is a great place to begin if you are new to owning a Wheaten. It has a lot of helpful tips for getting you off to a good start with your new member of the family. I read it cover to cover before bringing my puppy home, and continue to use it as a handy guide as issues of training and grooming arise.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great photos, but terrible advice, October 28, 2011

I bought this manual a few weeks ago so I could prepare for my Wheaten puppy. I bought it specifically for the grooming chapter, because the Wheaten coat mats so easily. The grooming chapter is fine, but I found the other chapters to be ill-informed and upsetting.

For instance, one section explains how to choose the right Wheaten puppy or adult. The author offered a long list of qualities to look for but warned readers not to choose a shy or apprehensive Wheaten. That's really, really poor advice. Some adult Wheatens may be shy, because they did not receive good care from their former owners. And some shy puppies may grow into sweet, good natured adults. Instead, the author should have advised readers to choose a puppy based on a temperament that compliments their own. If you are really shy, you might do well with the shy puppy of the litter. If you are really energetic, you might do well with the energetic puppy. Do not trust this author's advice.

I was also shocked by this author's training advice. On her section about crate training, she advises the reader to tap on your puppy's crate if they're whining at night. Really? Tapping on the crate will only teach the puppy that whining will get your attention. Instead, teach your puppy that the crate is a good place by using positive encouragement, treats, and toys. And when your puppy does whine, try your best to ignore it. Your pup will stop whining once he learns that whining does not merit your attention. Again, do not trust this author's advice.

I had high hopes for this book, because it received such positive reviews here on Amazon. Overall, the book is fine, but there are so many problems with her advice that this manual should not be used as the only resource for a Wheaten parent.

This book was exactly what I expected. It was well written, giving you everything you need to know about the breed (as a pet). We are in the process of adopting a SCWT, and we were very glad to have the extra info. It's also good to keep as a guide for later. Although informative, if you are thinking of a show dog, this is probably not the book for you.
