Book Description

May 15, 2007
You prepared as best as you could for the procedure. You followed your doctor's advice to the letter, and to your relief, the treatment went well. But you didn't expect the pain and difficulty you are now experiencing as you try to chew and swallow. The simple act of eating is no longer simple; it has become pure torture. Each year, medical treatments leave millions of patients unable to eat normally. Most hospitals deal with this problem simply by pureeing whatever food they are cooking. Needless to say, the result is not very appetizing, so many people refuse to eat, making it impossible to obtain adequate nutrition, maintain a healthy weight, and help the body heal. To help ease them through this difficult--and many times, unexpected--period, nutritionists Sandra Woodruff and Leah Gilbert-Henderson have written the Soft Foods for Easier Eating Cookbook. Here is an easy- to-follow guide designed to provide maximum nutrition and taste with minimum discomfort. This cookbook not only provides delicious recipes specifically designed to reduce mouth pain, nausea, and altered tastes, but also shows you how to modify recipes to increase or decrease calories, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber. You will learn how to use these recipes in any diet prescribed by your doctor for diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, or other disorders. You will learn how to modify your diet to improve your overall health, whether you are having trouble losing weight or trying to prevent unintentional weight loss. And you will learn how to prepare healthful and delicious foods in your own kitchen using simple techniques. The foods you eat will play a vital role as you travel the road to recovery. With the Soft Foods for Easier Eating Cookbook in hand, you are sure to find the journey easier, faster, and far more enjoyable.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When patients have difficulty eating due to illness, surgery, an injury or medical treatments like chemotherapy, they're often advised (or forced) to alter their diets. Those patients are likely to welcome this primer and recipe collection from dieticians Woodruff (an RD) and Leah Gilbert-Henderson (a PhD). Gilbert-Henderson didn't just talk the talk, but committed herself to months on a pureed diet, informing her work with valuable perspective on the difficulty and monotony of a soft-foods diet. Since restrictions vary from patient to patient, the authors approach the subject with multiple needs and appetites in mind. Recipes range from the expected (smoothies, custards, scrambled eggs) to more involved, flavorful fare like Baked French Toast, Sweet Potato Soup with Cilantro Pesto, and Burgers with Barbecue Sauce. In addition to simple instructions, each recipe offers nutritional information and ways to increase or decrease calories and to remix dependable standbys. Packed with tips and tricks from those who've been there, this is a vital work that opens a vista of flavors to those whose options are severely limited.

This book is a very valuable resource for anyone who needs to know how to prepare food for someone (or yourself) who cannot chew or swallow well. It provides a clinical explanation of various conditions and then the book assists you with helpful solutions and recipes, as well as additonal source material. With it, you can locate providers of various kinds of additives that are used to thicken food - making liquids easier to swollow. Well worth the money. I purchased several books, but this is the best one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for those who need soft or pureed foods, August 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Soft Foods for Easier Eating Cookbook (Paperback)
I'm a registered dietitian who works at a senior services non-profit. I purchased this book for myself as a resource and also for a client's wife who needed to prepare soft and pureed foods for her husband who had surgery for head and neck cancer some years back. This book is a thorough, comprehensive, inexpensive resource for anyone facing the challenges of preparing tasty, appealing foods and meals for someone who must be on a mechanical soft or pureed diet for whatever reason. Good resource for caregivers of those with later-stage dementia who also need pureed or modified texture diets.
