This book is a very valuable resource for anyone who needs to know how to prepare food for someone (or yourself) who cannot chew or swallow well. It provides a clinical explanation of various conditions and then the book assists you with helpful solutions and recipes, as well as additonal source material. With it, you can locate providers of various kinds of additives that are used to thicken food - making liquids easier to swollow. Well worth the money. I purchased several books, but this is the best one.

I'm a registered dietitian who works at a senior services non-profit. I purchased this book for myself as a resource and also for a client's wife who needed to prepare soft and pureed foods for her husband who had surgery for head and neck cancer some years back. This book is a thorough, comprehensive, inexpensive resource for anyone facing the challenges of preparing tasty, appealing foods and meals for someone who must be on a mechanical soft or pureed diet for whatever reason. Good resource for caregivers of those with later-stage dementia who also need pureed or modified texture diets.

An elderly member of our family was diagnosed with dysphagia (trouble swallowing). Medical advice was that we needed to prepare only soft foods for the diet. I ordered this book for recipe ideas and found that there was substantially more information in it. For example, there was a complete description of the mechanics of swallowing, lists of foods that are recommended, lists of cooking appliances that are helpful in food preparation, sample diets, many helpful hints about swallowing medications and tips about making food flavorful and nutritious. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs help in this area. If you are not a medical professional it will educate you in the most helpful ways.

This book provides lost of information about swallowing problems, which was very useful, but I hadn't realised there weren't that many recipes.
However, the recipes that are included are simple, containing everyday ingredients. The one thing I don't like is that the measurements are imperial, not metric (but I can easily write out the conversions in the book). Would recommend this book to anyone who is newly-diagnosed with a swallowing condition, or the cook of such patients.

I am one of thousands of people suffering from dysphagia (inability to swallow anything solid) following a major jaw surgery. Since the surgery 7/1/2011 I have learned a few tricks by myself but the book provides some good recipes and common sense advice. It is really not for vast majority of people who can eat normally but I would strongly recommend it to fellow bad swallowers (dysphagiacs). It actually may be more useful as a real book than e-book but with some care one does not have to spill milk over one's Kindle. |
