I let my 11 month old daughter explore this book at the book store and purchased it immediately because she was so fascinated by this book. After bringing back to home, I realized it smelled so *chemical* (like gasoline) and even the brown dye (turtle shape) started to be off and got all over to her hands. I washed the book with the soap, but the smell never went away. I got concerned if this product is safe for children? I am wondering if this happens only to me or I shouldn't purchase this book series anymore in terms of safety for health ... I would appreciate other people's comments very much.

These are great for a first book, or at bath time. They are very durable, and made it through my daughters "major" teething stage.

Since the reviews for this book are very old I thought I would add mine as I just bought this last week. (June 2011). We have the fish counting book that I bought in 2001 for my son and it has lasted for 3 kids and counting! Yes, they can be gnawed on and the little teeth marks will last, but that's ok. It's a thick plastic so it would take some serious chomping to break off a piece. Just supervise use by babies and tots, obviously.

This is a lovely colorful book that my 2 year old loves to look at and play with in the bath. I did not notice any odors at all. The images come out of the book and stick to the side of the tub for added fun. A good buy.

My husband found this for our daughter's first birthday. She loves things with that firm foam texture and so this was a perfect find. The cutouts stay in place well enough but have enough small holes that it's easy for her to pull them out. Sure, she chomps down on them, too, much to her delight, and so far, while there are teeth-marks in the foam, I haven't noticed any actual wear or deterioration so I just keep an eye out and let her bite away -- better to bite on that than on a person! Our copy doesn't have any scent at all that I can detect and I'm usually very sensitive to anything like that, so maybe the reviewer who noticed that got a copy that had been contaminated somehow in the store? It does say that anything oily like a bath oil if you use the book as a bath toy would cause deterioration of the book, so maybe it came in contact with something in the store? Anyhow, this is just a great, fun book for our daughter.

I bought this for my baby when she was 6 months, she is 8 months now and loves it, she plays with it for longer than with any other toy, she loves pulling the shapes and playing with them. Very entertaining for her, I am very soon going to buy more from the same series. I highly recommend them.

We received Soft Shapes Fun With Colors for Christmas less than 4 months ago. Our little guy, he's 16 months old now, plays with this book every night in the tub. The pop out foam shapes stick to the sides of the tub and are fun to chew on. We were delighted at how quickly he recognized every pop out shape and how he enjoys taking them out of the book and putting them back in. The only drawback we found was that he somehow managed to rip off the last page.

I'm a bit concerned because it says "not for teething" and every baby will stuff the animals in her/his mouth, but other than that , a delightful book.

The animals pop out of the page like puzzle pieces, and are great fun.

To Mr. Gasoline, I never noticed the book offgassing any strage scent or chemical, I think maybe you were just unlucky?
