"Rocket-paced suspense."--Jeffery Deaver

Four children's lives hang in the balance. A vicious criminal is on the loose. With law enforcement at a dead end, there's only one man who can recover the hostages--Jonathan Grave.

FBI Special Agent Irene Rivers is horrified to learn that because of mistakes made by agents under her command, a murderer and child molester will walk free. When Irene's own daughters become the monster's next targets, she reaches out in desperation to an elite Special Forces operator. His name is Jonathan Grave. For Grave, results matter more than procedures. Together, they discover a new kind of justice--and a new breed of evil. . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Prequel? Awesome! July 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a NEW reader to the Jonathan Grave series. So new that I bought the first novel in the series and read right through to newest release without stopping! WoW. I have to say that in this case, I would've preferred to have read THIS book first before starting the series. It explains so much of the foundation of the key relationships that are a constant throughout the series. You get to see Jonathan "Digger" Grave in his first interaction with FBI Special Agent Irene Rivers and you also get your first real description of what Digger looks like. This prequel takes place back when Digger and his partner Boxers were still working for Uncle Sam in the Unit. These two specialize in hostage rescue and when things end badly for Agent Rivers on a case, someone comes after her by kidnapping her daughters. What happens from there is gut wrenching and life changing....

5.0 out of 5 stars Got some history with this one. October 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Liked it a lot.

We got to go back and see exactly when Wolverine, Irene Rivers, first met Digger Grave and Boxers.

I really enjoyed this book.

It starts off with an arrest that was illegal as far as the prosecutor and Rivers's boss Frankel are concerned.

Barney Jennings is being released.

So begins a really good read. Rivers can't go to her bosses or the police when her two daughters are taken. If she does the kidnapper will know and her girls will be history.

Enter Dominic D'Angelo, a priest and a friend to Irene for many years. He asks her how far she is willing to go to get her girls back and the answer he gets lets him know the course to take.

Dom puts her in contact with Jonathan "Digger" Grave. Grave is member of the Unit, Delta Force. Digger is also one of the best looking men Irene has ever seen.

Digger contacts his fellow temmate Boxers. Boxers is one giant of a guy and he and Digger agree to help Irene get her girls back.

So begins one great read. This one has loads of action, white slavers, pedophiles, murderers and one hell of a surprise.

Digger and Boxers are two guys who have no problem doing the right thing and Irene Rivers is one hell of a lady.

Five stars and then some

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Intro to Jonathan Grave January 1, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I must confess that I read Soft Targets without really looking at the description beforehand. The fact that it was a Jonathan Grave thriller was enough for me in that I had read five of the series already. As some of the other reviewers have stated, this is more like an introduction/prequel to the Grave series. It introduces Jonathan, his friend called Big Guy (certainly more than a friend), and FBI Special Agent Irene Rivers; in later books Irene, whose nickname is Wolverine, assumes greater responsibility within the FBI. This prequel, I believe, occurs while Jonathan and Big Guy are still in the military; latter books in the series show Jonathan in a different background but one who still "saves the day."

If one is interested in this type of genre, I don't think one can go wrong with Gilstrap's Grave series. I would suggest reading Soft Targets first, but like me, I did not. Not a huge problem for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Story. Never Disappointed! September 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Giljohn came through again. A fast-paced adventure I couldn't put down! My only complaint for John is that he doesn't satisfy my craving for instant gratification. I do know he just finished another book that will be out next year. That gives me time to sell two houses buy another renovate and move before it comes out... John's stories are like opening a Christmas present, or even better is Thanksgiving Dinner, you gobble it up because it's so good and then it's gone! The wait for the next turkey dinner is interminable! My word to new readers of John Gilstrap's Jonathan Grave Thrillers is to read this book, then start on reading all of the rest of John's terrific books. That will almost hold you over until next year's book comes out. Almost.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this author! December 24, 2014

Gilstrap has quickly moved to the status of a favorite author for me. He has a way with wording. His pacing is spot on. Just when you think you have it figured out, things change direction. I've already read the first and second in the Jonathan Grave series and have just downloaded the 3rd! I can't wait to get reading it.

I actually paused halfway through another book I was reading because I had to read some Gilstrap.
