4.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, But Some Essential Songs Have Been Left Out
This is a compilation of songs from the four albums by GRIN, as well as from Nils Lofgren's early solo years, through his excellent 1979 album "Nils". The material is outstanding, highlighting a great artist during his peak years. But where is "Love Or Else", one of Grin's best songs? Where is "Shine Silently", probably the closest thing to a hit single Nils has ever had...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but incomplete
Nils has been a favorite of mine since the early 1970s. This compilation is a strong intro to his solo work and as the leader of Grin. It's worth adding to your music library. However, it features a live, extended version of "Back It Up," not the tight, two-and-a-half-minute classic from his 1975 "Nils Lofgren" album. Fortunately, that one is...

This is a compilation of songs from the four albums by GRIN, as well as from Nils Lofgren's early solo years, through his excellent 1979 album "Nils". The material is outstanding, highlighting a great artist during his peak years. But where is "Love Or Else", one of Grin's best songs? Where is "Shine Silently", probably the closest thing to a hit single Nils has ever had? In order to succeed this collection should have included all the truly essential songs from this period, but it doesn't. Nils' first 4 solo albums are represented by only 8 tracks here, not nearly enough. My advice is, instead buying one CD that does an inadequate job of covering all this material, you'd be better off buying 2 CDs, "The Very Best Of Grin", and any one of the several collections covering Nils' early solo years.

Fortunately, that one is also available on CD, so pardon me while I go order it from Amazon. (Oh, and to build on your Lofgren collection, you'll need to get "The Very Best of Grin" on the Spindizzy/Epic/Legacy label. The sound quality is excellent, and it contains several tracks not included on this, the "Soft Fun, Tough Tears" CD.)

I don't care what's missing because what's there is wonderful. Nils makes me dance, makes my sisters dance, makes guitar-want-to-bees..want to be. Don't miss out cause it's all good. Pauly

I fell in love with Nils Lofgren's "Grin" the first time I heard them. Their self-titled "Grin" became my most played and favorite album. Nils has a depth that comes through in his music that is both intriguing and inspiring. A man way before his time. He was sensitive and tough before it was fashionable.

From his sweet "Take you to the movies tonight", to one of the most driving songs I've ever heard, "Direction", he's just a quiet power and a musical genius. These are true classics. You buy this CD and you'll be a fan for life.
