The original Amazon Trail was a fun game to play, if it worked. It featured gameplay that was challenging, educational yet engaging and feesable for children. However the following points must be made:a) Certain sections of the game are difficult to master, and possibly difficult for those of many ages. b) Frequent technical glitches disrupt gameplay. It took ages for me simply to get the intro running, and the game froze in annoying places. Unless you are a techie, be prepared for frustration and difficulty. c) The makers of the games were over-ambitious. The game is both too long for the concentration spans of young kids and the graphics and animation were not good enough to support some of the demands of the game, hence the freezing. As a basic game, good. Actual gameplay is difficult occasionally.

Even though the trails get longer and harder to pass through, it is a good computer game. I'm doing research on it for a novel.

It's the original made way back in the day. I remember playing it in school on ancient computers.
It is without a doubt the best edition in the series. It's simple and fun to play, but difficult to master. I preferred this original edition Amazon Trail it to the original edition Oregon Trail in some ways. Both are classics, that since being reissued in newer editions have largely gone down the drain and introduced terrible bugs (some that I've heard about, others I've personally experienced). I say stick with what works, and play the classics (especially since you can pick them up so cheap here on Amazon). If your kids aren't hyped up on newer video games, they'll love this classic.
