5.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten voice, March 17, 2001
This review is from: Softly the Brazilian Sound (Audio CD)
I don't understand why is so difficult to find Joanie Sommer's CD's. She was the best cool voice of the sixties. Why must we buy her albuns only in Japan? She had a fantastic sweet voice. Listen to her performance in some Brazilian bossa nova standards like "Carnival" ("Manha de Carnaval", with different lyrics of the famous Sinatra recording named "A day in the life of a fool") or "Meditation", an Antonio Carlos Jobim's masterpiece. The album is superb. All tracks are in bossa nova rhythm, with the participation of late Brazilian guitar player Laurindo Almeida. Just one more question: why the strings background? If you like Stacey Kent, the best jazz singer today, listen to Joanie. She was Stacey Kent yesterday. We want to hear in CD others Joanie's LPs like "Sommers Seasons" or "The voice of the sixties" , one of her best recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The sweetest voice singing the best Brazilian music, July 24, 2003

This review is from: Softly the Brazilian Sound (Audio CD)
I've been in love with Joanie Sommers since I was a teenager and she was the Pepsi Girl. The pairing of her sweet voice and phrasing with the lush Bossa Nova-style rhythm and melody is absolutely perfect. I miss hearing her and wish someone in the music business would find a way to reprint her out-of-print albums.

As the reviews here prove, Joanie Sommers' voice is not forgotten. Her partnership with Laurindo Almeida on "Brazilian Sound" is unforgettable. Too bad this has not be re-released on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too much Sugar?, August 12, 2007

This review is from: Softly the Brazilian Sound (Audio CD)
This is something i've been trying to deal with (no joke) since i first heard Joanie Sommer's adorable "Softly" collection of romantic love songs with Brazilian flair...Can there ever be too much honey? And could there Ever be too much Intimacy? I had not imagined there could ever be more sweetness than i could absorb or deal with, yet there it is. And i'm not complaining mind you, just beguiled & overwhelmed. Her boldly amorous song stylings are exquisitely softer than country velvet and cream, softer even than petals of the Iris in May. Bouyant and beguiling, there is unbounded tenderness, and affection expressed in these songs of love. This is not overpraise, just ardent admiration. Hearing is believing!
