5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
Sure Structured Analysis is out of date. Sure this book focuses alot on that. But, I have found this book invaluable. I am using this book in a software engineering class I am taking. The step by step instructions on Data Flow Diagrams, State Charts, etc. are invaluable. This book is giving me a theoretical "history lesson" for OO prog and UML. This book...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book, April 21, 2000
This review is from: Software Engineering with C++ and CASE Tools (Paperback)
Sure Structured Analysis is out of date. Sure this book focuses alot on that. But, I have found this book invaluable. I am using this book in a software engineering class I am taking. The step by step instructions on Data Flow Diagrams, State Charts, etc. are invaluable. This book is giving me a theoretical "history lesson" for OO prog and UML. This book is also a great brush up on C++ and it has decent tips on improving your coding.

If you are looking for a quick reference on OO programming with C++ I wouldnt recommend this book. If you are looking for a good book explaining both methods (structured analysis AND oo prog) then get this book.

I really liked this book. It delivers what it says it will deliver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please write more books, Mr. Pont, May 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Software Engineering with C++ and CASE Tools (Paperback)
I bought this book for a college class I ended up not taking this term, but have found the book invaluable in brushing up on my C++ skills for a class in Artificial Intelligence.

Mr. Pont explains C++ programming in a clear, concise manner unlike any other programming book I have read. I was having trouble understanding pointers and structs and found the textbook from my first C++ class (over a year ago) useless and confusing.

The author cuts through the nonsense, points out things that I USED TO use in programming that I now know are unnecessary. I can't wait to sign up for the Software Engineering class I bought this book for; by then I'll hopefully be more of an expert in C++, and I know I'll also go ahead and read the "rest of the big picture" of Software Engineering.

The only disappointment is finding that Mr. Pont has no more books available through my favorite on-line bookseller, Amazon.com!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars More CASE studies, July 17, 1999
This review is from: Software Engineering with C++ and CASE Tools (Paperback)
I had Dr Pont teach me this subject at University (Leicester- UK), and it was a great reference to C++, to both process and O-O techniques. The CASE studies were good but I feel more in depth, and complicated studies would also be a great resource.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough, June 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Software Engineering with C++ and CASE Tools (Paperback)
I am using this book for a course I am taking on C++ and it is almost useless. If your looking to get this book this learn C++, don't! Please, try another title. I found that the book does not get detailed enough on several different topics. This book is definitely aimed at the beginner. However, if you want to truly understand C++, this is not the title for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors, December 6, 1999
This review is from: Software Engineering with C++ and CASE Tools (Paperback)
Horrible book. First off, Pont tries too hard to be funny. He's not. Secondly, he writes programs and then shows output, but he types the output himself instead of displaying the true output. Page 695 is a perfect example. He writes: "Creating an integer stack" in the program, yet the output says: "Creating an interger stack". Obviously, Pont's programs do not properly compile or else he would not have to change the output. Other mistakes include missing parentheses in various places (page 680), wrongly placed astericks (666), and a multitude of other errors. The worst part is the long, incomprehensible code he writes for some examples in the book. It is code that ONLY he can read, believe me. I highly recommend that if you are thinking of using this book for teaching purposes, you find another book!
