3.0 out of 5 stars Basic ref. for software sizing 4GL type environments., December 1, 1997

This review is from: Software Sizing and Estimating: MK II FPA (Function Point Analysis) (Wiley Series in Software Engineering Practice) (Paperback)
This work takes you through what you need to know to size a "classical" development. The detail and approach is that for applications development/ consulting. The feel is somewhat old style; it won't help much for warehousing type structures. The research really dates from mid 80s and does not reflect even client server developments. Quality of database usage or design is not there at all, and the word "database" does not appear in the index. Kicking productivity to modern levels is achieved by setting a high "function units per hour" level. It sort of assumes that project management is what the game is all about, and that technical flair is not worth a mention. It allows a relatively mechanical way of grinding out an estimate that's objective and defensible, but would make any nifty programmer laugh. However, there is a sensible overiew of strengths and weaknesses at the start of the book. It is a useful volume to help size projects if you are consulting to a non-technical audience. In addition it has industry standard numbers that are popluar in presentations. At £65, one might expect better printing quality: It's not attractively produced. It is at least packed with detail.
