Book Description

The first comprehensive book on software test and analysis

You can't "test quality into" a software product, but neither can you build a quality software product without test and analysis. Software test and analysis is increasingly recognized, in research and in industrial practice, as a core challenge in software engineering and computer science. Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles, and Techniques is the first book to present a range of complementary software test and analysis techniques in an integrated, coherent fashion. It covers a full spectrum of topics from basic principles and underlying theory to organizational and process issues in real-world application. The emphasis throughout is on selecting a complementary set of practical techniques to achieve an acceptable level of quality at an acceptable cost.

Highlights of the book include
* Interplay among technical and non-technical issues in crafting an approach to software quality, with chapters devoted to planning and monitoring the software quality process.
* A selection of practical techniques ranging from inspection to automated program and design analyses to unit, integration, system, and regression testing, with technical material set in the context of real-world problems and constraints in software development.
* A coherent view of the state of the art and practice, with technical and organizational approaches to push the state of practice toward the state of the art.

Throughout, the text covers techniques that are suitable for near-term application, with sufficient technical background to help you know how and when to apply them. Exercises reinforce the instruction and ensure that you master each topic before proceeding.

By incorporating software testing and analysis techniques into modern practice, Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles, and Techniques provides both students and professionals with realistic strategies for reliable and cost-effective software development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for a course on Software Testing, September 16, 2008
This review is from: Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles and Techniques (Paperback)
There are number of excellent features in this book which makes it an ideal book for a course on Software Testing/Analysis.

Unlike many other books it covers a good mix of theory and practical issues. The list of topics covered are broad. The topics are also presented in coherent systematic manner throughout the book.

Unlike many other existing texts this book is appropriate for a postgraduate level course, covering many topics at a greater depth. The open research issues presented at the end of each chapter presents many interesting ideas for students wanting to undertake research.

It can also be used as a text for computer science/IT undergraduate students, in their final year of their programs. The right level of formalism is used/introduced making it applicable for a wide range of audience.

It also includes a good set of tutorial questions and slides reducing the effort required for staff teaching Software Testing for the first time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Used for Grad-School Class. Not impressive., July 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles and Techniques (Paperback)
I had to buy this book for a grad-school class. I'm a year in to the program; about 5 classes. Of all the books I've bought for the program thus far, this book is the least useful. I never could use it except to get the text for the homework.

As for the book contents itself, the book is riddled with silly examples that end up taking up a lot of space but don't really contribute anything to the book. (Chipmunk this and Chipmunk that!) I guess what I'm saying is the book isn't straight forward and contains a lot of unneeded text.

This book is way overpriced and isn't worth it to me. Unfortunately, if you need a book on software testing and analysis, I can't suggest anything else...

This review is from: Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles and Techniques (Paperback)
Sine I was not familiar with software testing, this book helped in building the basics. It covers different topics which give it the edge upon other books.
