Editorial Reviews

Sogno barocco - A baroque dream - is the third recording of Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter on Na+¯ve. Dedicated to the first baroque Italian opera, with its long recitativos and its powerful arias, this recording gathers together hits of baroque music such as Monteverdi "Si dolce +ª 'l tormento" and "pur ti miro" and discoveries such as Rossi's Lamento of the Queen of Sweden. Anne Sofie von Otter sings with acclaimed soprano Sandrine Piau on three of the included pieces. The Ensemble Cappella Mediterranea and Leonardo Garcia Alarcon are rising stars of the baroque world and provide an excellent accompaniment to the nuanced performance of von Otter.

VON OTTER, Anne Sofie. Sogno Barocco. Naïve [Records]. 2012. $16.99. {$14.99 from Amazon.com]
ASvO, mezzo-sop; Sandrine Piau, sop. on 3 songs; Susanna Sundberg, contralto on one song; Ensemble Cappella Mediterranea, Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, cond.

Anne Sofie von Otter has a beautiful voice and it is showcased to perfection in this collection of arias from Baroque operas (Cavalli's Elena and La Calisto, Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea and Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria) and other pieces by Monteverdi, Provenzale, Rossi, and Cavalli. The composers represented span the seventeenth century. In all, nine vocal arias are presented in all in this album, starting and ending with Monteverdi. Interspersed among them are three instrumental pieces by Cavalli, which are played (two) by the ensemble and (one) by guitar alone. They have paid a great deal of attention to the order in which the songs are presented -the individual pieces form a musical suite with its own arch and fall.

There's not a bad cut in the album but there are two clear winners. The first cut has von Otter singing Monteverdi's beautiful aria, "Si dolce e' l'tormento." There is a baroque trumpet interlude in the middle that is absolutely stunning. So is cut 2: the ensemble's rendition of an instrumental piece from Cavalli's opera, Elena. Another favorite for me was cut 9: in Cavalli's "Dolcissimi baci" from La Calisto, von Otter's and Piau's soprano voices intertwine and echo each other.

I am a novice at Italian baroque music. I knew of L'incoronazione and a few other compositions by Monteverdi but nothing at all about these other composers and their music. I'm more likely now to buy more music from this genre and these composers, and I certainly will look favorably on anything by von Otter.

That`s what really good music does to you. It opens doors in your mind and expands your sensibilities.

Sogno Barocco -`a Baroque dream' is themed around female heroines of early Italian opera, such as Poppea, Penelope, Diana, Helena or the Queen of Sweden - those afflicted with what Francesco Cavalli, in "Vivo per Te",
calls "my resplendent pain". Anne Sofie von Otter with baroque rising star Leonardo García Alarcón. One of the current best specialists of Italian baroque, he and his orchestra Cappella Mediterranea bring amazingly new colors to this repertoire. Together with von Otter and collaborator French soprano Sandrine Piau they create a wondrous journey through the Italian baroque universe of Monteverdi, Cavalli, Provenzale and Rossi.

Anne Sophie von Otter has long been praised for her intense musicality and her repertoire is very broad. But here in this collection of works the gentle, sure quality of her voice has rarely sounded more impressive. The works in this recital are as follows:
L'Incoronazione di Poppea: Signor, hoggi rinasco and Pur ti mio by Claudio Monteverdi with Anne Sofie von Otter and Sandrine Piau
Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria: Di misera Regina by Claudio Monteverdi with von Otter
Squarciato appena havea by Francesco Provenzale with von Otter
Un ferito cavaliero di polve "Lamento della Regina di Svezia" by Luigi Rossi with
von Otter and Susanna Sundberg (Alto)
La Calisto: Vivo per te , and Dolcissimi baci by Pier Francesco Cavalli with von Otter
Doriclea: Doriclea lamento by Pier Francesco Cavalli with von Otter
Elena: Sinfonia by Pier Francesco Cavalli with Leonardo Garcia Alarcon conducting the Cappella Mediterránea

This is an unusually beautiful and creative recording and one that deserves the attention of all music lovers. Grady Harp, October 12

The recorded performances here are intelligent, tasteful and interestingly performed with attention paid to historical accuracy in ornamentation, instrumentation and musical conception without any sacrifice of tonal beauty. The repertory is a combination of familiar and obscure material that should be appealing to a wide variety of listeners. Vocal balance between the two singers in the duets is outstanding. The recorded sound is excellent.

Anne Sofie Von Otter is one of the most complete artists in the world today. She is able to apply her beautiful voice and intelligence to music of different historical periods. However, I think the music from the baroque period shows Von Otter's abilities at their best. The program of this album is dedicated to music from Italian composers, with an emphasis on long recitatives and short arias. The music by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Rossi and Provenzale presented on this recording emphasizes declamation and expressivity over vocal display. The selections are mostly in the meditative mood, with some humorous and dramatic flourishes. Von Otter is always on top of her game here, the voice remains fresh throughout her range, with great flexibility. Her Italian is exemplary as well as her expression, both elegant and passionate. She is also able to lighten the atmosphere in the amusing Squarciato appena aveva, a parody of Rossi's Lamento de la regina di Suezia. Von Otter is accompanied by great singers and musicians. The always lovely Sandrine Piau complements the mezzo in duets from L'incoronazione di Poppea and La Calisto. The contralto Susanna Sundberg is solid in her contribution to the last selection, from Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria. And of course, Leonardo Garcia Alarcon conducts the Emsemble Cappella Mediterranea with great style and complementarity to the singers. This is a fascinating presentation of Baroque vocal music at its most expressive and intimate.
