Of all of the outstanding recordings Peter Green has made with the Splinter Group this is perhaps their finest release. The rust present on the first Splinter Group recording is absent here. Green plays in all of his fluid, soulful glory. The band is tight and remarkably attuned to his musical presence. Covers of some old Fleetwood Mac numbers are particularly enjoyable. Even though some of the same blues standards are covered on the first release the versions on this recording improve upon them greatly. It's nice to have Peter Green back after all of these years. His is one voice that was sorely missed, as guitarists of his like are rare in that he never overplays but is remarkable for his passion and soulful soloing. Brilliant musician, brilliant recording. Highly recommended...Simon

5.0 out of 5 stars An All Time Great Returns, May 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Soho Session, Getting Better All The Time (Audio CD)
I was at the show recorded for this album, and although a recording can't ever do complete justice to a live event, this does come really close. Peter Green came back from the brink, and with the help of some fine musicians, (in poarticular, his friend, Nigel Watson) he is again making music that can shivers down the spine.

Yes, it is true that the music on this set is mostly old classics and blues standards, but the progression since Peter came back is there for all to hear! A new studio album is due in the next few months, and then we might hear what the Splinter Group can do with some fresh material!

The feel on this album is lovely, and regardless of the context in which it was made, it is wonderful. When you then consider where Peter has been, and how his powers as a musician are returning, it is little short of miraculous!

Pete G

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Live Recording, May 5, 1999

I have always loved the Fleetwood Mac sound from the early 70's but did not know of Peter Green until I saw him with the Splinter group in a small venue in Minneapolis, MN last September. I was blown away by his guitar playing and the ease at which he sings the blues. This double CD is a fine recording that takes me back to that live session in Minnesota every time I play it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Live Set, April 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Soho Session, Getting Better All The Time (Audio CD)
Peter Green continues the third phase of his career with this latest lineup of his Splinter Group. In this excellent set the Group performs at a small jazz club in Soho, and runs through several of Green's Fleetwood Mac hits (Black Magic Woman, Rattlesnake Shake) as well as the usual repertoire of blues standards and Robert Johnson songs. Guitarist Nigel Watson contributes one original song, and there is one Bo Diddley tune added. The sound is superb and the performances are magnificent. One can't help but wish that Green would try his hand at songwriting again; he hasn't recorded a composition of his own since the early 1980s. It would be interesting, at least, to seee what this band could do with some original material. However, perhaps it's the singer, not the song, that really matters. This CD set is highly recommended for any Peter Green fan or blues enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars P.G. Doing Great, April 8, 1999

This review is from: Soho Session, Getting Better All The Time (Audio CD)
This, the third of the Splinter Group cds is very good. Peter Green continues his comeback. It is great to hear this legendary guitar master back in form. It is a temptation to want everything to sound just like Fleetwood Mac of the 60's and early 70's. But, Green and company take the old standards and make them fresh and interesting. Green continues to improve and sound more at ease with what he's doing. Even if you are not a hard core Peter Green fan, there is a lot to like about this cd. Well worth the effort to find and make a part of your collection. Solid blues and a touch of jazz feel with a little old time gospel sound in spots.

An excellent example of what the Splinter Group can do.Recorded live at Ronnie Scott's it captures the blues of Fleetwood Mac and Robert Johnson the way they should be played. An excellent album that will surprise. My personal favourite Splinter Group album although Time Traders runs a close second.
I'm not particularly keen on the "Street Angels" tracks on disc 2,therefore 4 out of 5 stars.A worthwhile purchase
