Not worth the money!,
By
This review is from: Soil Mechanics and Foundation Design: 201 Solved Problems (Paperback)
This book is poorly written. The solutions are often not explained well. There was no attempt by the author to properly subscript notation or uses his own notation. The problems are simple. A much better book is the 6 minute solutions - which I highly recommend. Don't waste your money on this book. One star is a high rating in my opinion.

This is the best book which I have seen in the market, which has covered all the TOPICS for PE-CIVIL EXAM, AND GEOTECHNICAL AFTERNOON EXAM.It has a systematic Index mentioning all the various topics, which saves lot of time in exam. In ple foundation you will be able to see the example all the way up to elastic settlement, also pile foundation in sandy soil, where as most of the books talk for only clays. In short if you use it then you yourself realize the difference. GOOD LUCK VIRAG BHACHECH

Fraught with Errors, Inconsistencies. Poorly-Written,

Spend your money, and more importantly, time, elsewhere.I would imagine most folks interested in this text are preparing for the PE Exam. You should look elsewhere. Notably, the 6 Minutes Solutions book (Geotechnical) contains more breadth of problems, is nicely-divided into "Breadth" and "Depth" sections for study purposes, and *importantly* has minimal errors (the errors it does contain are corrected in an updated errata on the publisher's website). This text, conversely, is fraught with errors, includes simplistic problems that any PE candidate should already know, and is poorly-written and poorly-produced.

The book seems not refined to me. The figures could be improved and the errors could be minimized. I would not recommend this book.

~ This author has given his 100%, when he wrote this book. It is a gift to all Civil Engineers who is working in construction materials engineering/testing and/or Geotechnical Engineering. People taking PE, must have it.~ Price is amazingly so low. ~ Book worth way much more than five star or my words. ~ Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering DVD Review by the same author is also good for PE Exam.

All you need for Geotechnical Review,
This review is from: Soil Mechanics and Foundation Design: 201 Solved Problems (Paperback)
This book covers huge amount of subjects and all in great detail. Author has emphasized NCEES topics like deep and shallow foundations, pavement design, retaining walls, soil settlement and earthwork engineering. There is a blend of technical clarity and engineering practice hints that makes this book a keeper reference after the P.E. exam. Another plus is that it has not been rushed to market and has a systematic and uniform way of arriving at answers.

I did pass my PE on the first try in foundation. I did review this book three times, as the author adivsed. You truly need his DVDs (It is a pack of three) prior to working the book. It is true that it has few errors, but the author is always eager to correct them if you contact him. Best of luck.

Practical Problems & Well Worth Buying,
By
This review is from: Soil Mechanics and Foundation Design: 201 Solved Problems (Paperback)
This book has the most realistic problems of any review book in its price range. Author adds useful comments gained from industry experience here and there. Excellent coverage of earthwork calculations and shallow foundation design. It wouldn't be available at PPI site if it wasn't useful.

This review is from: Soil Mechanics and Foundation Design: 201 Solved Problems (Paperback)
This book has useful exercises and good explanations. The downside is the quality of the typing. It seems that it was typed by somebody who does not know about science typing, despite the modern typography that we have now available. You have to crack what the author wanted to mean with some non common symbols used. Even though the book is good. It has good examples.
