--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bruce and Kyra Murrell are newlyweds living the life of young, successful, professionals. Bruce is a handsome, and quite charming Chemical Engineer that works for a major oil company based out of Houston. His professional obligations require frequent travel, which has caused friction and distance in his marriage. His wife suspects that he is having an affair, and is determined to find out the truth. Kyra Murrell's professional status is on the rise in Corporate America. She has a high profile position with International Affairs, but has become distracted with her career, due to depression.

Despite the rough times she is going through with her husband, Kyra has attempted to honor her marriage vows. That is until.............she reunites with an old classmate, Everett Barnett, who understands her pain, provides her with quality companionship and reacquaints her with emotions she had mentally suppressed. Though Bruce has been involved in his own deceitful behavior, once he learns of his wife's infidelity, he struggles to deal with the consequences of his actions now that the shoe is on the other foot. But isn't that typical of an adulterer...Always able to dish it out, but never able to endure it when it happens to them in return........

4.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - Happiness and Pain, November 9, 2005

This review is from: Soiled Pillowcases (Paperback)
In SOILED PILLOWCASES, Kyra Murrell is living a fairytale existence. She has a successful career, a beautiful daughter and, until recently, believed she had the perfect marriage. However, when she suspects her husband Bruce of infidelity, the storybook romance turns into the things nightmares are created from.

Distraught over the fact that her husband could possibly be having an affair, Kyra seeks comfort from Everett Barnett, a former classmate from her home town of Detroit. What she finds in Everett is a friend, a confidant and everything her husband hasn't been to her in a long time. With Everett, Kyra gains strength in knowing someone finds her desirable and seemingly cares for her. However, what Kyra perceives as happiness soon turns into despair as she deals with the betrayal of her husband, her friend and herself. The depression that ensues sends Kyra into a tailspin that only she can change.

Crystal Perkins-Stell has written a fast-paced novel on the effects of infidelity in a marriage and the individuals involved. She portrays Kyra in a realistic fashion as she rides a rollercoaster of emotions that eventually spirals out of control. It was compelling in the style the author used, beginning with Kyra telling her story in a support group and ending it there as well. The author wants readers to understand how devastating extramarital affairs can be and that two wrongs don't make it right. However, I would have liked a deeper understanding of Kyra's character as well as Bruce's to better grasp the whys of their actions, but with affairs sometimes there are no real answers. Although not a unique story, SOILED PILLOWCASES is written in special way and carries the author's message of "Some of the same things that make you laugh, will also make you cry."
