I wish it won't be the last one..., April 1, 2008
This review is from: Sojourn Volume 6: Berserker's Tale (Sojourn) (Paperback)
This is the last paperback from the sojourn serie. I had waited for a long time for it to be released, because the original publisher, Crossgen, disappeared, leaving behind him several wonderful but unfinished series : Ruse, El Cazador, and Sojourn! Thnaks a lot, Checker Book Publishing, to reprint the paperbacks that never got released before!
First, the drawing is beautiful! The landscapes and the characters are very realistic but at the same time full of imagination. One of the best comics drawer, according to me!
Second, the story. Very basic at the beginning (at first, I started buying the comics more because of the drawing and the humor in the text, than for the story itself). But with time, it became more complex, richer, and far less manicheist than originally.
Will the story keep on? I surely hope so, even if the chances are low. Which is sad, cause you definitely have here one of the best and most original comics ever!

SOJOURN - the series lives up to its title, May 19, 2010
This review is from: Sojourn Volume 6: Berserker's Tale (Sojourn) (Paperback)
It turned out to be a brief stay after all. SOJOURN Vol. 6: THE BERSERKER'S TALE completes the uncompleted series. It collects SOJOURN's final four issues (#31-34), as well as the prequel story which had already been reprinted in the first trade volume, SOJOURN Vol. 1: FROM THE ASHES. Our heroine Arwyn's quest has taken her and her seedy party across the high seas as they go seeking the fourth shard of Ayden's mystical arrow. When all five shards of the arrow are pieced together, this would summon the legendary warrior Ayden who three centuries ago slew the warlord Mordath. Except that the killing didn't stick, because Mordath has risen from out of his tomb, emaciated, with flesh pallid as that of a zombie's, and that strange mark on his pate having transformed him into a sorcerer. Mordath, in his undead incarnation, succeeds in conquering the Five Lands of Quin. Mordath had quelled all resistance. Until Arwyn, royal archer of the Gerrindor outpost, stepped up, having sworn vengeance for the slaughter of her family.
Arwyn has stuck fast to her obsession, and she and the one-eyed rogue Gareth and his one-time lover, the thief Cassidy, now find themselves in the icy northlands of Skarnhime, home of the Iskani, a race of ice trolls that long ago refused to ally with Mordath. In Skarnhime our heroes stumble across the last and mightiest of the legendary berserker beasts, creatures betrayed and cursed by Mordath three hundred years ago. Arwyn also encounters the savvy old ice troll Gustavus and he might well have become the newest member of Arwyn's group if CrossGen Comics hadn't gone bankrupt in 2004. Gustavus was certainly a cool customer.
The writing is good; it continues to grip the reader. Ian Edginton readily conveys that sense of epic quest fantasy (epic fantasy quest?). But, as expected, it's Greg Land's amazing artwork that brings it home. Jeez, even his troll women look sexilicious. Once upon a time, this book was a best-seller off the CrossGen rotation. SOJOURN's cancellation left so much of the story up in the air. In this set of issues, new plot threads were even introduced. We learn of the cadaverous Mordath's yearning to regain his warm flesh and youth and he lays the groundwork for this. Two new characters step in, Gustavus and an ambitious troll assassin named Lady Khiva hired by Mordath to take out Arwyn. She and Bohr, Mordath's loyal (and somewhat likable) Captain of the Guard, immediately exhibit this fractious, prickly back and forth. I would've liked to have seen that develop. It really stinks that the last issue ends with that ominous cliffhanger. Just what did happen to Arwyn after her run-in with the berserker? Our parting view is of a blasted surface, our strong heroine vanished. The story strands us, with Arwyn stymied and short of her quest by two arrow shards. Mordath wins, by default.
What would it take for the CrossGen titles to be picked up again, their various story arcs resolved? Should I pass a hat around?

A great comic series ended too soon., March 10, 2008
This review is from: Sojourn Volume 6: Berserker's Tale (Sojourn) (Paperback)
Sojourn is one of my favorite Crossgen titles. This graphic novel contains the final issues printed of this great fantasy series. I started reading this comic late in the story, and Crossgen went out of business leaving the story unfinished. I just wish another publisher could pick up the story where this left off. A great read and artwork for fantasy buffs.
