5.0 out of 5 stars The book extols the joy of renting a French country house.
The book tells how the author and his wife spend three delightful weeks in a rented house in the old province of Gascony where on a clear day they can look out to the Pyrenees on the distant horizon. The book details the everyday pleasure they find in visiting historic sites, outdoor markets, and restaurants in a region blissfully off the beaten track of tourists and...

I spent most summers of my childhood not to far from where this couple spent a couple of months -- so I was very excited to read this book especially because not much is written about this area -- actually very little! This review is from: Sojourn in Gascony: Pleasures of the Palette (Paperback)
The book tells how the author and his wife spend three delightful weeks in a rented house in the old province of Gascony where on a clear day they can look out to the Pyrenees on the distant horizon. The book details the everyday pleasure they find in visiting historic sites, outdoor markets, and restaurants in a region blissfully off the beaten track of tourists and even French vacationers. Suzanne Kloman's recipes are interspersed throughout the text along with her useful tips on food shopping and housekeeping. The author's paintings are featured on the book flaps and in a special limited edition ($24.95) on color plates. Anyone seeking respite from the tourist throngs in Provence will find this book of special interest.

I spent most summers of my childhood not to far from where this couple spent a couple of months -- so I was very excited to read this book especially because not much is written about this area -- actually very little! However, when I started to read it -- I was quickly bored -- it was a short and fast read about their stay with very little description about the area, no humor and nothing much to go on if you are interested in the area (how could they not include anything about Armagnac or Foie gras -- the two things the area is international known for?). I am giving it 2 stars because I want more books written about this little known area of France, but this one need a lot more to keep me interested and engaged --sorry!
