About the Author

Ken Wadness has taught in elementary schools in Massachusetts for more than a decade. His love for the outdoors developed while he was a camper and then a counselor at summer camps in New England. Ken's dad bought him a used Argus 35mm camera when he was a senior in high school. With this Ken began taking pictures in black and white. His desire to capture in film the beauty of God's creation has led him to visit most of our national parks and travel back roads all over this great country. His award winning photographs have been published in newspapers and calendars.

Ken's first journey began at age three when he set out to look for his mother, who had gone shopping. He tricycled two miles to a shopping center where a nice lady called the police to take him home. Ken couldn't speak clearly at that age, so he got to ride around town in a police car while the policeman searched for his home.

Since hiking the Appalachian Trail, Ken has traveled to Alaska, where he lived on glaciers for a month during a National Outdoor Leadership School's course. He also bicycled from the northwestern point in Washington to the northeastern point in Maine. In addition to teaching full time, he enjoys traveling with three multi-media presentations that help him share the experiences of these journeys. The titles of these presentations are A Sojourn in the Wilderness, North to Alaska and From Sea to Shining Sea. He currently resides in Framingham, Massachusetts with his wife, Sondra. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

At an Exxon station where the trail headed off the road into the woods, I stopped for a last taste of civilization: two hot dogs, a Danish and two bottles of orange juice. It was difficult to shoulder my 70-pound pack and leave the comforts of the valley. As I walked down the trail into the fresh smelling forest, away from the hustle and bustle of society, I felt instantly transformed and at peace. The noise from the city and the highways faded slowly into the quietness permeating God's creation. I hiked a steep trail to Tinker mountain and had great views of towns below and Carvin Cove Reservoir on the other side of the mountain.

At one point along the ridge I was filled with such joy that I had to stop and write. "Nature truly has her own gentle rhythm. After walking through Troutville under Interstate 81, I sat down and watched people rushing about, their trucks, jeeps, and cars speeding along the highways. Restaurants, TVs, motels and the hustle and bustle of everyday life created a noisy whirlwind, and nobody seemed to notice it. And yet within five minutes of taking the trail down into the wilderness, I could hear, see and feel God's creation -- moving at its own pace, in its own time, in a beauty and quietness that was His alone. The earth, the dark soil so still and unmoving, and the leaves ever melting into the ground while giving new life --- so much is happening all around me, yet there is a true deep peace here. For most of us this feeling is accessible, sometimes just a stone's throw from the world that spins furiously around us, but intimacy with God and His creation takes time. Thus, if only occasionally, we need to step off the world's treadmill for a walk in the wilderness. We need to linger on the path of peace." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A photo is worth 1,000 words;the words are worth it, too, January 19, 2000

This book makes even a non hiker want to take to the trail. Although the diety is frequently mentioned, it is not a sermon, merely Mr. Wadness's perspective on the beauty he sees. Put this book on a coffee table, and allow others to browse the trail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gain without the pain - Sit back and Enjoy the scenery!, March 24, 1998

I am not an out of doors type of person unless the conditions are perfect. But this book is a true delight. It is full of many romantic places and the photography could win a National Geographic Award. Have a look at sleeping and living outdoors. Through the rain Ken keeps you feeling cozy in a down sleeping bag enjoying a warm drink, through his blisters you'll meet terrific trail characters. Be it mice in the night using Ken's boots as a storage bin or drooling over the wonderful photographs of the trail you will realize if it wasn't for Ken's tenacity and true initiative and love of the outdoors you would not have been able to live, love, laugh, cry and experience the trail for yourself. This book is a must for every home. A gift that keeps on giving and if you ever feel like you might need exercise, pick up Ken's book, sit back and realize that some things are much better left to the imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, March 23, 2002

This review is from: Sojourn in the Wilderness: A Seven Month Journey on the Appalachian Trial (Hardcover)
I highly recommend this book! As a person preparing for this "walk in the woods" I found this book to be uplifting. It has beautiful illustrations and makes your feet itch to hit the trail. There are a lot of references to God, and those that are not comfortable with this should steer clear. I found it personally to be a nice touch. For those who want the experience of the trail without hiking it, this is a great book.
