5.0 out of 5 stars Much-needed antidote to the militant "Christians"
I live an hour north of "Focus on the Family," a right-wing mega-church that seems more focused on anger than Christian love. They don't like liberals, gays, Muslims, multiculturism, Democrats and others. "Focus" and its authoritarian orientation advances a theology that's quite conducive to the goals of its neighbor, the US Air Force Academy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ordered but returned automatically
This is an amazing magazine, but I, like the others, had trouble getting it through amazon. I ordered it just fine, but the company automatically refunded my money 8 weeks later. I never received any issues. It was listed as "returned" but I never returned anything.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ditto Ordering Problems, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Sojourners (Magazine)
I have to agree with the previous review about subscribing to this magazine through Amazon. Someone accepted the payment, but they claim there is no record of my subscription.

Update: It's been a year since I subscribed to this magazine. I never received a single issue nor did I get any of my money back. However, now they want me to RENEW my subscription. There isn't a record of my subsciption when I want the magazine or a refund, but now that they want more money there is a record? Unbelievable!

This is a fine magazine, but they do not honor subscriptions coming through Amazon. No amount of showing them paid receipts would get them to budge, and Sojourner's subscription department seemed high-handed about honoring Amazon payments. By all means get the magazine, but don't do it from here.

With God on Our Side: One Man's War Against an Evangelical Coup in America's Military
"Focus" has a media empire with over 2000 radio stations around the world.
"Sojouners" on the other hand resembles the teachings of Jesus, they're concerned about the poor, and they advocate for peace & justice. Even their advertisements are heartening, as many of them are for opportunities to cultivate compassion in the world.
"Sojourners" is very well designed, both long and short segments, interviews, interpretations of scripture, etc. The current issue includes a segment on great books for children. It also features an article by Brian McLaren, adapted from his book Everything Must Change: Jesus, Global Crises, and a Revolution of Hope.
The editor, Jim Wallis, is a very influential author and speaker. It would be great if he was on 2000 stations. Fortunately, he has written some best-selling books such as God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It (Plus), and Sojourners is working on a radio studio.
I would urge people not to let themselves be deterred by some ordering obstacle. Maybe calling the magazine directly and ordering with a credit card would be a better way to go, or sending in a subscription card from a copy of the magazine. Either way, "Sojourners" is an important journal that deserves support.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging for Christians, February 8, 2011
This review is from: Sojourners (Magazine)
Christians live in an difficult age when disbelief is the norm, mediocrity defines many faiths, and passivity is not a choice of strength, but of fear. "Sojourners" discusses the real life of a believer.

"Sojourners" challenges all of those points. What does it mean to be a relevant Christian? With a myriad of complex social issues that Christians often respond to as a matter of politics and avoid examining the bibical principles.

Hunger. Homosexuality. Homelessness. Third world unrest. War. Gender leadership (in the Church).

What do you think?

"Sojourners" addresses and facilitates thinking about these issues. Don't expect it to preach to the choir, though it clearly has a liberal political view. It is, in some ways, like the old "Moody Magazine," with an emphasis on world issues.

Read "Sojourners" carefully, with your Bible in hand. Disagree or agree with them, you'll like find yourself more passionate about one side or another of an issue.

I fully recommend "Sojourners."

Sojourners Magazine is a welcome answer to the hate and Un-Christian messages of the radical right so-called religion writers and ministers. The articles in the magazine and their authors concentrate on the relevancy and truthfullness of the Progressive Christian message from Jesus Christ for the 21st century.

1.0 out of 5 stars Christian?, January 31, 2009
This review is from: Sojourners (Magazine)
This is progressive propaganda dressed up as a Christian magazine. Sojourners is more interested in promoting secular progressive causes than they are in spreading the Gospel. Christ is rarely mentioned, except when he is needed to promote a cause. As long as that cause isn't abortion of course. If you are serious about growing closer to God, there are infinitely better sources than this. If you are a liberal looking to save a rainforest or to build a school for pygmies (who don't want it and never asked for it) this is right up your alley.
