5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, fresh and funky September 23, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The current rage in the industry seems to be the retro-soul movement, with artists like Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, to name a few. I enjoy the music because it offers a refreshing alternative to the stuff being labeled as "soul" and "R&B" these days. I don't know who encouraged Solange Knowles to go in this direction musically, but no better decision could have been made for her. I never thought I would like - much less buy - anything by Solange, but I was pleasantly surprized at just how GOOD this is! With this CD, I feel that she has found her niche in the music world - a retro-soul diva-in-training. I'm glad she took this route and did something completely dissimilar from what most current R&B females are into. If she had recorded yet just another standard urban contemporary CD, she would have gotten lost in the sauce with all these other R&B chicks, along with still having to endure constant comparisons to her older, more famous and commercial sister. God knows that is annoying for anyone, always being compared to a more popular sibling when you yourself are an individual and not just so-and-so's brother or sister. I've been there, so I know how that feels.

Instead, Solange hooked up with some excellent writers and producers to create something that was fresh and new, but at the same time, enveloped an old-school vibe. The result was SOL-ANGEL AND THE HADLEY ST. DREAMS, a wonderfully tight musical affair that celebrates the music of the '60s, '70s and '80s. If you're fully into today's contemporary R&B sound and looking for Beyonce-like tracks, you won't find them here. Also if you don't care for old school music or the retro sound, then you probably won't like this, either. But for what Amazon is currently offering for this CD ($6.

5.0 out of 5 stars super reFRESHing August 26, 2008
By Tammy
Format:Audio CD
i love, love, LOVE this album! so fresh, so refreshing, so new, so everything i'm feeling about music. i've been waiting for solange to drop her album ever since i first heard "i decided". and her album did not disappoint. her vibe is so old school and funky fresh, i love it. it's such a different change of pace from everything else. this is one of those cds that you grab from your shelf when you need a little bit of cheering up, feel like dancing like no one's watching, or need some cleaning-up-the-house jammin' music, i swear.

i've been on a femme fatale hype for a while now - i got estelle, algebra, a.keys, mary, keyshia, aaliyah, chrisette ON LOCK on all my stereos - and i'm so glad to add solange to the mix. my favorites are "i decided", "6 o'clock blues", "ode to marvin", "cosmic journey", "dancing in the dark"...ahhh, i might as well say everything 'cause i love it all. haha. it's definitely worth it.

by the way, i love amazon to death, but i got this at target for $6.98. NO LIE. so if you're not sure if you want it, you might as well buy it and give it a shot. first off, i guarantee you'll love it. and if you don't, well, at least it only cost you seven bucks and some change. =)

EDIT: ohhhh, my bad! it's $6.99 on amazon also! sweeeeeet. don't sleep on solange, folks! cop this asap.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4˝ stars - An excellent album worthy of much respect. August 28, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Admittedly, I was not amused when I first found out that Solange was going to make a 60's and 70's soul inspired album. Quite frankly, by the time news spread I had already grown tired of this trend brought to the mainstream by the likes of Amy Winehouse and Duffy. However, this album is superb and it is far more different, unique, innovative, creative, and exploring than the efforts of the afforementioned artists. Here, Solange does enough to set herself apart and provides refreshing modern touches to the otherwise trite throwback trend, including two out-there electro-pop tunes: "Cosmic Journey" and "This Bird." The latter is, in my opinion, the only misstep on the entire disc. The trippy and spacy "Cosmic Journey," however, is a success and one of my
absolute favorites. "God Given Name" is an extremely blunt introduction to the disc where the artist insists that she be respected in her own right for who she is. "Would've Been The One," which seems to be about a love triangle... or maybe rectangle, is the standout track, for me. The production is flawless and Solange's vocals are on point, especially at the breakdown. Even after months (and I mean months) of listening to both catchy versions of "I Decided," their charm still remains unadulterated. The genius third single, "T.O.N.Y. (The Other Night, Why?)", which was written by Cee-Lo, is a clever regretful tell after a one-night stand. "Sandcastle Disco" is a light, pop record that was a very good single choice. I love the analogy between a woman being fragile post-breakup (or in Solange's case, a divorce) and a sandcastle, which might be blown away. The production on "Valentines Day" is great and the chorus is very reminiscent of the Neptunes, even though this specific track is produced by Music World's own Bama Boyz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving this direction! August 26, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Wow! It must be hard to have for Solange to live in her sister's shadow, but this album will or at least SHOULD help her get out of it and garner a big following of her own.
i only first heard about this when i heard the remix of "I Decided" at a club a month ago or so. I loved it and when i realized it was Solange i couldn't wait to see what the album would be like. I mean I was never a fan of hers but this really surprised me.
i love the throwback 60's soul sound she pulls off here. Both versions of "I Decided" are amazing, as well as Sandcastle Disco, Would've Been the One (I LOVE THIS TRACK!), 6 O'clock blues. These are the more "immediate" songs that you love right away. As for some of the other downtempo tracks, the production values and style are all there, so they may grow on me.
overall this was a total surprise for me and i'm really glad about it. Solange could have done a "typical" R&B record - you know the kind that get lost in the shuffle all the time - but instead she took a great new (retro) direction in the way of Amy Winehouse and Duffy, but with a twist.
It's a shame to see all the haters talking about this and comparing her to Beyonce. Who wants to be compared to their older siblings? Imagine having to follow behind Beyonce all the time? I'm just happy to see Solange establishing her own style completely disctinctive from her sister.
Def check it out!
