RELIGIOUS AND SECULAR MUSIC IN LATIN-AMERICA, March 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sol Y Sombra (Audio CD)
In this recording the period music group Chatham Baroque explore religious and secular music of baroque Latin-America.These pieces are both intrumental and vocal. The music of some of these composers has not been performed in two or three hundred years.Their music is also eloquent charming, solemn and sublime. The composers in this recording are from Latin-American countries such as Guatemala,Bolivia,Mexico, and Peru. These composers in most instances were trainned by other European composers (mostly from Italy) who were at the service of Spanish courts or Cathedrals. There are also some anonymous works from Bolivia,in fact all of the three pieces from Bolivia in this recording are anonymous religious chants, and are sung in Latin unlike the secular music and other chants in this recording that are sung in Spanish. This is a great recording and one of great value for those interested in the study of music or also for those who love new old music. My congratulatios to Chatham Baroque for this outstanding recording.
