Very good interactive jazz, November 19, 2009
This review is from: Solace (Audio CD)
Jamie Baum's 2008 disc was a welcome surprise to me. I picked it up based on the sidemen -- I wasn't familiar with Baum's flute-playing. She has Ralph Alessi and Shane Endsley on trumpet, Douglas Yates on sax, Chris Komer and Vincent Chancey on french horn, George Colligan on piano, Johannes Weidenmueller on bass, and Jeff Hirshfield on drums. Additionally, Kyoko Kitamura sings on one song. The songs are strong mainstream jazz, with some classical flavor and a lot of great playing. Baum is a skilled flautist, and she is generous with letting the other players play. The "Ives Suite, Pt 3" mixes samples of John Kennedy, spoken word, and Kitamura's singing with the music. It's a good way to vary the music. This is overall a very good disc.
