gazing on the sonic highway,
By joe (albany, ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Solar Coaster (Audio CD)
Let's just say you are driving on a long stretch of deserted highway, alone and comfortable with the sprawling distances all laid out in front of you. You are listening to this song playing loud on your radio, it is full of imagery, it moves just as fast as your car, and smooth with no bumps or unforeseen dangers ahead. You don't realize it until about the third song in, but this music is serving as a perfect soundtrack to your solitary drive. You enjoy it immensley and turning it off would be like running out of gas in the middle of nowhere. This is keeping you going. The melodies soar and the vocals are so assimilated into the sound that you think of them as just another instrument. There are rich textures being created with a strong core of melody in the center, it binds it all together, keeps it solid because this music is so ephemeral it makes you feel like you are dreaming, yet awake because you still have to pilot your car. You remember all of the great bands of the early 90's -Swervedriver, Ride, Slowdive, Pale Saints. You think of these bands and wonder "God what happened to all of them" Well, just as assuredly as you will reach your destination, this music contains everything that is great about those bands.Just make sure it keeps playing, because you don't want to stall out here in these parts.

Intense and melodic,
By Waxmaster "Waxmaster" (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Solar Coaster (Audio CD)
Solar Coaster bridges the "emo" and shoegazer sounds perfectly. I stumbled across this CD 10 years ago in a batch of no-name artists, and was stunned by this soaring, melodic rock. It still sounds fresh to me now. The guitar tones are cascading and immense, an effect not unlike My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless." It's too bad this group just disappeared. I think a lot more people who enjoy mid-90s bands would dig this, and though I don't think Solar Coaster sounds dated today. You can buy a used copy for a penny now, too -- well worth it!
