Better than nothing,

Just bought a house and wanted a more secure mailbox. Got this and my complaints about it are that it doesn't come with long enough screws and no washers at all. That wasn't apparent when I purchased it. Also, the door although seemingly sturdy can be easily pried open. The door is not secure any other place but the immediate area of the lock so you can easily pull the door to either side and pry it open. I think perhaps if you are able to drill big enough holes to install 2 additional mailbox locks on either side of the original lock this would solve the problem. I am hoping that this mailbox will serve some purpose and possibly "deter" the average identity thief since my husband will not allow me to purchase a more expensive and possibly better mailbox. This mailbox is better than a non-locking one so that is why I gave it an average rating.

A decent "theft deterrent" mailbox, but can be improved...,

As others have pointed out, this isn't the most secure mail box. But the point is that is locks, and it's relatively secure compared to your run-of-the-mill curbside mail box, and can hold two or three days worth of mail.I purchased mine from the big orange home improvement depot, for installation at our unattended home under renovation. I mounted the box to a concrete garage wall, so nevermind what what fasteners it did or didn't come with -- I used concrete lag bolts and silicon sealant to keep the water out. The key lock makes the box secure from casual passers-by, but not pry- or pick-proof. In fact, I'm pretty sure I could bend open the front door with my bare hands and/or a stick if I really wanted to, and most certainly with a flat blade screwdriver. But my objective was just modest security, not absolute -- so for that, I'm satisfied. The key lock isn't the best designed approach. You see, when I unlock the door, if I open it with the key still in the lock, my whole key ring falls out when the door is open. It would be more convenient if the latch was a sprung self-locking design that re-locked when I closed the door. This requires a key to re-lock. So it requires me to insert the key twice (once to unlock, then again to re-lock) when I retrieve the mail. The outgoing mail could be better thought out. A interior pivoting plate is provided so that outgoing mail can be set inside. But if it's just a single envelope, if I don't leave it conspicuously hanging out of the flap door, the it's in danger of not being weighty enough to keep the interior pivoting plate from rotating up, causing the mail carrier to miss it. In fact, on two occasions the mail carrier has ignored my red flag and re-inserted the outgoing mail into the delivery slot. I know it's better/safer for me to run outgoing mail to a postal drop box, but nevertheless, this has been a problem. The box can fit three or even four days of mail before it starts to overfill into the delivery space at the top. But if a large envelope or small box is included in that days delivery, forget about it -- it's instantly at capacity. As far as waterproofness goes, this box has lived through three winters and has been fairly reliable, only taking on a small amount of water when the carrier leaves mail hanging outside the front flap. All in all, this has proven to be a good, but not great mailbox. Theft deterrent, with reasonable capacity, and good weatherproofing, but with room for improvement in all areas. If you're looking for a modest upgrade from your standard curbside mailbox, this is a good choice.

Don't buy unless you want an illusion of security,

You may like the look of this mailbox. It is certainly capacious. But don't buy it for security. I was just looking at this product at a store today, and I was easily able to reach through the slot and retrieve the assembly instructions at the bottom of the box. If I can do that, so can a thief who wants my Netflix mail or a bank statement or anything else. To be fair, every "secure" mailbox except one that I looked at I could simply reach into and fetch things. This is placebo security.
