Just bought a house and wanted a more secure mailbox. Got this and my complaints about it are that it doesn't come with long enough screws and no washers at all. That wasn't apparent when I purchased it. Also, the door although seemingly sturdy can be easily pried open. The door is not secure any other place but the immediate area of the lock so you can easily pull the door to either side and pry it open. I think perhaps if you are able to drill big enough holes to install 2 additional mailbox locks on either side of the original lock this would solve the problem. I am hoping that this mailbox will serve some purpose and possibly "deter" the average identity thief since my husband will not allow me to purchase a more expensive and possibly better mailbox. This mailbox is better than a non-locking one so that is why I gave it an average rating.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy unless you want an illusion of security, March 20, 2010

You may like the look of this mailbox. It is certainly capacious. But don't buy it for security. I was just looking at this product at a store today, and I was easily able to reach through the slot and retrieve the assembly instructions at the bottom of the box. If I can do that, so can a thief who wants my Netflix mail or a bank statement or anything else. To be fair, every "secure" mailbox except one that I looked at I could simply reach into and fetch things. This is placebo security.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent "theft deterrent" mailbox, but can be improved..., June 9, 2011
As others have pointed out, this isn't the most secure mail box. But the point is that is locks, and it's relatively secure compared to your run-of-the-mill curbside mail box, and can hold two or three days worth of mail.

I purchased mine from the big orange home improvement depot, for installation at our unattended home under renovation.

I mounted the box to a concrete garage wall, so nevermind what what fasteners it did or didn't come with -- I used concrete lag bolts and silicon sealant to keep the water out.

The key lock makes the box secure from casual passers-by, but not pry- or pick-proof. In fact, I'm pretty sure I could bend open the front door with my bare hands and/or a stick if I really wanted to, and most certainly with a flat blade screwdriver. But my objective was just modest security, not absolute -- so for that, I'm satisfied.

The key lock isn't the best designed approach. You see, when I unlock the door, if I open it with the key still in the lock, my whole key ring falls out when the door is open. It would be more convenient if the latch was a sprung self-locking design that re-locked when I closed the door. This requires a key to re-lock. So it requires me to insert the key twice (once to unlock, then again to re-lock) when I retrieve the mail.

The outgoing mail could be better thought out. A interior pivoting plate is provided so that outgoing mail can be set inside. But if it's just a single envelope, if I don't leave it conspicuously hanging out of the flap door, the it's in danger of not being weighty enough to keep the interior pivoting plate from rotating up, causing the mail carrier to miss it. In fact, on two occasions the mail carrier has ignored my red flag and re-inserted the outgoing mail into the delivery slot. I know it's better/safer for me to run outgoing mail to a postal drop box, but nevertheless, this has been a problem.

The box can fit three or even four days of mail before it starts to overfill into the delivery space at the top. But if a large envelope or small box is included in that days delivery, forget about it -- it's instantly at capacity.

As far as waterproofness goes, this box has lived through three winters and has been fairly reliable, only taking on a small amount of water when the carrier leaves mail hanging outside the front flap.

All in all, this has proven to be a good, but not great mailbox. Theft deterrent, with reasonable capacity, and good weatherproofing, but with room for improvement in all areas. If you're looking for a modest upgrade from your standard curbside mailbox, this is a good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Secure Mailbox, May 6, 2009

This is a great mailbox. Recently I have had a problem with someone using my address for credit card applications etc. So I decided to get a secure mailbox. This was a wise purchase, it's very roomy (I get lots of catalogs and magazines). Now the mail carrier will have some place to put all of my mail instead of some in the mailbox and the rest on the porch.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lock is theft deterrent only, January 3, 2012
As a mailbox, this is a good product. As a SECURE mailbox, this definitely falls short. We had ours broken into, figured the lock just wore out or something though so we bought a new one. In less than a week it was broken into along with our neighbors who had an identical one. We now are looking into a more secure box.

If you're looking for something more secure than a normal mailbox, this is better only because it locks. Buy at your own risk though is there is a theft problem in your neighborhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Sturdy Mailbox, August 24, 2011

After moving to a new location, we needed to replace our current steel mailbox with one guaranteed not to rust. The landlord suggested either plastic or aluminium.

Although I didn't want plastic, I agreed to try this mailbox. The body is hard plastic and the flap and mail door are aluminium. I was very surprised at the construction of this mailbox. It appears to be quite durable in its design and the internal flap system prevents even little hands from reaching the bottom.

The door locks quite securely, though it would be possible to force the door open if you applied enough pressure. However, I think you'd have to be pretty determined to force the door that hard. For a general day-to-day use, this mailbox should provide enough peace-of-mind for the average user.

3.0 out of 5 stars Large mail box - Missing parts, August 5, 2011

This review is from: Solar Group MSK0000W Extra Large Lockable Security Wall Mount Mailbox, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
Large mail box, great if you are out of town for several days.
Magazines fit without the need of folding.

FYI... the box of the mailbox is plastic.

Arrived with missing keys, and missing red flag. I noticed another review also had missing parts. There seems to be systemic problem at the manufacture doing the pick-and-pack.

Very prompt and easy replacement from Amazon. All is good now.

5.0 out of 5 stars RED FLAG, January 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
LOVE RED FLAG... ALLOW lady mailman to pickup posred bills and other out-going mail on days there is no delivery.
the mail slot allows the inside flapper to lower and hold out-going mail. when emptied... the flapper toggles away and mail can be dumped into the box section.
wish there was a larger wall mount for bigger stuff.

Included necessary hardware along with quick and easy diagram for mounting instructions. Very durable and attractive addition to compliment brand new or older home exteriors, at an affordable price. Installation was completed in less than half an hour. I stepped back to admire the finished job and was quite satisfied with the results and my purchase.

Your mail man probably won't like it because you can't fit very wide packages in it.
