4.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and secure, fixable wet mail solution (read review)
I bought this model from Home Depot 5 years ago and installed it on a small poured concrete base that I created. This box is sturdy (can probably give a vandilizing bat a run for its money) and secure. Locking mechanism makes it difficult to pry open easily (heavy duty doors).

Pro: Sturdy, good lock (secure), functional, spacious.

Haven't assembled this yet, looks OK. Just got back from the locksmith. All the parts / pieces / directions and KEYS are shipped in the box where the mail is securely stored. And it was locked. No skinny hands or coat hook tricks would do the trick. Aggravating.

Con: Mail gets wet in storms. Buy some silicone caulk and run a bead under the roof to waterproof (some wasps moved in one year, they thought it was a good house - now they have to chew through some caulk to get in). Now 5 years old the paint is peeling off badly, I need to strip it, prime it, and recoat it, not happy about that but it's doable. Lock needs occasional WD-40 treatment, but no more than 1-2 times a year.

Was the same price 5 years ago that Amazon is offering it for now, so the economy has nothing to do with it's cost.

I wanted a decent looking box when I moved in to the new house, this one looked the part and provided the function I wanted (security and resistant to abuse).

I recommend, but only if you seal the openings under the roof so your mail doesn't get wet. Manufacturer could have easily created a gasket to solve this problem but didn't.

Good luck in your secure mailbox searching.

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Great Mailbox, November 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Solar Group PED0000W Large Cast Aluminum Pedestal Mailbox, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've been looking for a nice but sturdy mailbox that would handle our mail should we travel and not be able to retrieve our mail daily. I have tried a couple others only to find they leaked or were not quite up to standards as far as quality. We have a few acres in Hawaii so the sun and rain can be a problem at times. This box is so well made and at the same time very attractive. I did reinforce the pedestal with some steel rebar, just in case a vehicle or hurricane should meet up with it. I have also screwed the bottom into the cement block I prepared for the base. This baby isn't going anywhere. Our mailman loves it as it is quite easy for him to gain access. The only downside is oiling the key entry every month do to heavy rains, no big deal. We're quite happy with this purchase.
Thanks Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars purchased for security but looks nice beside black iron fence, September 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The box arrived in fine condition and was easy to assemble. Be prepared to create a solid cement pad with some depth. We added a wire screen cut to fit inside the bottom of the box to keep insects from entering and surprising us. Delivered mail is kept secure and dry. The box looks good beside our black iron fence. Small hands can reach into the slot, but it seems unlikely that mail could be extracted. This is a design dilemma because the slot needs to be large enough to accommodate bulky mail. Biggest surprise is the capacity. Box is roomy and will hold accumulated mail. Mail carrier loved it and told a neighbor she should look at ours when she said she was worried about security. Be advised, outgoing mail is not secure.

Absolutely love it! It was easy to assemble and it looks great. I was concerned about the quality of it, but it is heavy and gorgeous.

This locked mailbox is not only nice looking, but very functional too. I love that it locks and has a huge box for when I can't get my mail right away our when a customer is drooping off pay and I am not her to get it. Highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars What Does the Mailperson to To Get Mail Out???, December 10, 2011
What if you leave mail in the box for the mailperson to take away, like dvds or any other type of mail if you're not going out that day and want them to take your mail for you? I would put up the red flag to let my mailperson know I had mail in the old mailbox. The only thing I can think of is to leave the red flagging device out, and keeping the box unlocked??? Anyone have any other ideas? Are the mailpeople used to this sort of thing?

We love our new mail box! Our brick mail box was knocked down for the third time so we decided to make a change this time. We were surprised how many people have told us how much they like our new mail box. Now if we can just keep people from running into it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pedestal Maibox, June 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This pedestal mailbox was pretty much what I expected when I ordered it. However, two warnings to potential buyers. First, one must make a concrete base to anchor the mailbox, whether it's for a porch or in the ground. I wanted it to put on my porch. I didn't expect to have to make a concrete base. Add another $50 or so to make the concrete base. I was unable to find a vendor willing to make the concrete base so I ended up doing it myself. Second, putting the mailbox together is no piece of cake. Unless you're handy with tools you may need help putting it togther. The finished product is nice and hopefully will last for years to come.
