5.0 out of 5 stars mr. mystery, February 11, 2002

There are many sides to Sun Ra's genius, and the relentless explorer is one of his best. With the same minimalist rapture he found in such 60's classics as Heliocentric World, le Sonny continued his experiments into the early 70's, now augmenting the sound with his beloved mini-moog. The Solar Myth Approach gathers together some truely spooky, and beautiful, sounds that will liven up your dreams (maybe). If you're into some serious alchemy, this is what your looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, December 25, 2009
Sun Ra was so ahead of his time, he didn't even have the eletronics that fit his music so well until he was working for about twenty years--the gagets just were not invented.

But they were by 1970, when Solor Myth Approach Volumes 1&2 came out. Ra, though, didn't go to eletronics. They came to his music. And that music here is as it always was--a free romp through musical space where anything can happen at any time. Ra was very serious about not being serious, and hopped around music like a playground kid.

Good for us. There are percussion battels, crazy woodwinds, and plenty of synths. All there for the taking of Ra and the Arkestra. The absolute chaos any master musician in full command can allow himself.

This non-seriouser saw all music has his for the taking and enjoyment. And you can't make a more serious musical statement than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moog For The Mood, September 22, 2008

This review is from: Solar-Myth Approach 1 & 2 (Audio CD)
The vision of Sun Ra is placed within an experimental framework, as ambient music is shaped through the use of a Mini-Moog synthesizer in the pair of releases that were recorded in 1970-1971.

The Solar-Myth Arkestra capture the special textures through the oboe, flute and drums of James Jacson. The landscape has a wonderful symmetry of colors and Sun Ra brings a sonic harmony to some of his most challenging works within his vast discography.
