Very well organized book. To-the-point and explains everything a "new" System Administrator would need. But, remember, this books skims the surface. It's not for intermediate or advanced users. I rate this book for the beginning user.

I teach Solaris Administration (both 2.x and System 7). I have also worked with System 8 - alpha. Let me tell you, I recommend this book to my students who are beginner admin. Of course this book does not go into too much detail if you want to learn how to set up NIS+, or DNS, but the basics are covered. It's a great intro book! I recommend it to all beginners, and new users of Solaris.

Forget the reader below... THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!,

This book is GREAT for Solaris Sparc AND x86! The reader below must be on something to only rate it two stars. The book DOESN'T EXPLAIN what makes OpenWindows work (notice the title: Managers and Administrators), but the book uses the CDE environment from front to back!! IT'S AWESOME!! How can you NOT love this book?I just bought Solaris 7 for $9.95 (comes with x86 and Sparc versions) from Sun's web site and needed something to teach me. I have absolutely no experience with Solaris (better now than never!). This book has been totally awesome in explaining everything I need to know to plan, install, and manage/administrate the Solaris environment. I just finished my MCSE and want to certify in Solaris. I was a die-hard Microsoft NT person for a looooooooong time, but I'm now realizing the world of Unix and Solaris and what (superior) strengths it has over NT. This book will sit on my desk for many years to come.. Although the book says Solaris 2.x, it was written at the time 2.6 was released. The new Solaris 7 (which is really 2.7) still works perfect with this book - unlike Microsoft who changes their OS so often and makes you buy tons of new books all the time! Another reader below rated this book good, but also said the information is a little dated. If you are new to Solaris (like me) then you won't even know the difference. If you are coming from the world of NT (and used to spending tons of money on books every week) then you won't know the difference! My final analysis, BUY THIS BOOK! IT IS A SURE WINNER!

This book is a good introduction to anyone looking into Solaris 2.6. It assumes you know nothing or very little at all. Very clear, and detailed.

I own several unix books! This one complements my collection. All though I consult the MAN pages more so than this book. syaing that -I would still buy it again. I use it for referance from time to time, and used it as a study tool for certification.

This book is definately for beginners,

This review is from: Solaris 2.x for Managers and Administrators (Paperback)
This book is for beginners, and beginners only. I have been working with System V, BSD Unix, and Linux for over 2 years. This book, at best, refreshed my memory on certain aspects of the system. For people looking for an indepth look at unix administration, I would recommend looking elsewhere, because this book will only lead to boredom and a $50 dent in your wallet. If you are new to Unix, then this book is right up your alley. It is laid out very well, and has a nice, easy to read format.

Frustrating at times,

This book can be really frustrating at times. Let's say that you're trying to get a Sun box on a network, and you forget to edit /etc/nsswitch.conf to specify dns lookup for hosts. You'll have a tough time with this book as your only reference - as far as I can tell this isn't discussed in this book at all. Why not? There are other examples. I often end up searching for additional information elsewhere. Your mileage may vary.

EXCELLENT stuff for anybody new to Solaris !,

As I was new to UNIX systems, this book offered me almost anything I needed to install and start mastering Solaris. The book is concise and well-organized; a special "A" mention goes to the index. The only criticism I can give: installing a modem with this book is not easy. Freeland & his mates did a good job, well worth the money.

I have been working with Solaris 2.X for 3 years and still found a few new insights in this one. If you are new to Solaris and Unix I would start here!

A very usual book for Solaris 2.x beginner,
By A Customer
This review is from: Solaris 2.x for Managers and Administrators (Paperback)
This is the first Solaris book I read, I think this is a great book for beginner. However, this book do not covered the new features on Solaris 7. I was using this book to setup a DNS server, but I could not find any information about the named.conf file.
