1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor security book, March 19, 2003
By
This review is from: Solaris 9 Security (Networking) (Paperback)
I am Solaris 9 certified and a Checkpoint-certified "Security Expert." I am also a GIAC-certified Intrusion Analyst. In my professional opinion, this is simultaneously one of the worst security books AND one of the worst Solaris books I have ever seen.

The author's "credentials," as mentioned in his bio, are almost entirely Microsoft-centric, with no mention whatever of Solaris in any way. And believe me, it shows.

I didn't (couldn't) finish the book, but I read or skimmed perhaps half of it and found dozens of errors -- often one or more on each page. Often, the discussions are muddy at best -- e.g., the "explanation" of PAM concepts.

This book is a disaster. Stay away from it. Get Limoncelli and Hogan instead, followed by reading the Solaris man pages for security-related utilities.

1.0 out of 5 stars Premier Press should be embarrassed for publishing this book, April 10, 2003
This review is from: Solaris 9 Security (Networking) (Paperback)
This is easily the worst computer-related book I have purchased in long time. I am a Sun Certified admin for Solaris 7 & Solaris 8, and I bought this in Feb. 2003 to help prepare for the new Sun Certified Security Administrator Beta Exam, as well as to help familiarise myself with some of the improved security features in Solaris 9, because it was one of the first books out that claimed to be focused on Solaris 9 security. In addition to being INEXCUSABLY riddled with technical errors (as if that weren't bad enough), the writing style is atrocious; it reads like a bad grammar-school book report (actually, worse). I'm serious. If I didn't feel so [taken advantage of for purchasing this garbage], I might actually feel sorry for the publisher for having been duped into publishing it. Trust me, it's REALLY BAD. The publisher (Premier Press) should be ashamed of themselves for not doing their homework. Fat chance I would ever consider buying a book published by them again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price for., July 17, 2003

Rodmont (Sao Paulo, SP Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Solaris 9 Security (Networking) (Paperback)
The books contains not only errors but brings no new information about security on Solaris 9 and procedures. It simple does not show you any news besides man pages and Sun .pdf books. You must find all information on to-do's other place.
If you are looking for SC300 course and Security Cert on Solaris 9 this will disappoint you.
