This review is from: Unknown Soldier/Beyond Abilities (Audio CD)
I am not a metal fan - one "power chord" repeated over and over while some guy screams into a microphone. For me, that's not music. Warmen, however, is a interesting mix of metal and I don't know what.
I first heard "Salieri Strikes Back" and was taken with the pace of the beat - a VERY fast beat - and I thought the keyboards sounded, in a way, almost like a harpsichord. Is it possible for their to be metal that is musical, has rhythm, soul, fun, and skill at playing instruments? It would seem so with Warmen! It certainly has basis in metal or just hard rock (hard rock I like if it's done "right" - whatever that is :) ,but metal I've never liked), but keyboards??? Interesting! They keyboards are a major instrument and are played fast, pacing the guitar, but the keyboard player doesn't just pound the keyboard like a metal guitarist pounds one chord over and over and over. The keyboard player is all over the keyboard when he's playing! This definitely has the thick, hard-driving sound I've come to expect with hard rock but the keyboards are a significant part of what makes this interesting. I've really never heard anything quite like this before. I usually like blues, some jazz, classic rock, flamenco guitar, but this is a completely different beast and I like it! There are two CDs in this one, but you pay the price of one CD. The CD is fun, fast, furious, and exhilarating. The only down side, for me, is after a while I have to stop listening to it. I get fatigued from the sound. It's not something I would listen to when I wanted to unwind from a long day at work. Hardly. It's a better CD for getting you going in the morning to get you to work on time!
