Photo-Book on the Lib!, November 19, 2009
This review is from: The Soldier: Consolidated B-24 Liberator (Living History Series, World War II) (Paperback)
Though more Consolidated B-24s were produced than its B-17 stablemate, the Liberator has always been the Rodney Dangerfield of bombers. Equipped with an elegant, graceful wing and a portly fuselage, the B-24 has never received the credit it deserved. THE SOLDIER, a colloboration between Dan Patterson, Michelle Crean and Dick Perkins, provides a nostalgic look back at this winged warrior.
THE SOLDIER follows the 'Living History' format of combining period and contemporary photographs with brief but comprehensive text. Perkins and Crean provide the text, a 10-page summary of the Lib's career including several first-person reminiscences. Patterson handles the photographic end, mixing his gorgeous color shots of Dave Tallichet's "Delectable Doris" with vintage images of B-24s, their aircrews, combat scenes, etc.
Ine one respect, THE SOLDIER provides a more evocative portrait of its subject than some of the other books in the series. "Delectable Doris" is maintained in 'G.I.' issue so Patterson's photos give an accurate picture of what a serving B-24 probably looked like - chipped paint, scratched metalwork and all.
Liberator and other heavy metal fans will enjoy THE SOLDIER. Recommended.
