Review

"Service members and their families are no strangers to gathering tactical equipment, setting a strategic plan for operations, and accomplishing a mission. Jeff Rose has taken this "military" mentality and applied it to our personal financial battleground in an easy-to-understand and easy-to-navigate standard operating procedure.

He gives military families a fully operable plan complete with training, resources, and battle drills that will enable us to wage the war against debt and WIN!"

---Tara Crooks - Cofounder, Army Wife Network & Coauthor, 1001 Things To Love About Military Life

"Jeff gives solid financial advice whether you are soldier or not. It's great to have friends that love military families as much as I do!"

-- Ellie Kay, Best selling author Living Rich for Less

If you're looking to change your financial life, you have to change your mindset and habits, and no one knows better than Jeff Rose. Don't worry, this isn't a dry personal finance book; his stories keep it real and make it a great read.

You don't have to have a military background or bent to appreciate and learn from this book. Among the personal finance books I've read and reviewed in the past year - and as a talk show host, I get a lot of them! I'd easily put Soldier of Finance in the top 5.

Get it, use it and then share it.

The author is an Iraqi War vet and Certified Financial Planner. He says he was overwhelmed when he first joined the Army, but by the time he was in Iraq dealing with deadly situations, the preparation and training he received in Basic Training gave him the knowledge and instincts to survive and thrive in Baghdad.

Back in civilian life as a CFP, he wrote this book as a kind of Basic Training for Personal Finance.

Since it's impossible to cover every possible personal finance scenario in a short book, Rose gives the reader enough fundamental PF knowledge to handle their own unique situations with confidence.

I've read many other books on PF. Many are so dense and boring that I abandoned them after a few chapters. I didn't have that problem with Rose's book. The book is very readable. The author interweaves stories of his time in the Army and his own personal failures (financial or otherwise), then offers up the lessons he learned and how those lessons can be applied to our own finances. The easy-to-read and entertaining prose makes all the financial stuff go down easier.

To sum up:
1) This book teaches you the fundamentals of personal finance.
2) It's easy to read and entertaining; and the financial advice is easy to understand and apply.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but couldn't resist the camouflage piggy on the front! :)

Okay, first things first, while the author does share a lot of his military background in the book, you do not have to be in the military to be able to apply the book to your finances. The author used personal stories in a way that made it very relatable and that anybody could follow the action steps in the book.

What I Really Liked

Each section has a Go/No section that gives you clear action steps to take. I'm the type of person that needs a checklist to follow and this was a clever way of doing so.

I learned more about credit scores that I ever thought I would want to know, but thankful that I did.

Loved how the author talked about finding a "Battle Buddy" to hold you accountable. This is spot on!

What I Didn't Like

There wasn't much about the book I didn't like, BUT I would have like to see more on the right time to buy a home. The author did have some good tidbits in there and highlighted a story of someone that bought too much home. I know there are different types of mortgages (which all confuse me) and that's where I would have liked to see more.

Other than that, it was a great read and I think will help a lot of people.

As a fellow author in the finance genre I've read a lot of other finance books. What I love about this one is how engaging it is, how easy to follow it is, and how Jeff makes everything seem so doable and straightforward.

I really enjoyed Soldier of Finance. Jeff's story is relatable and effectively sets the tone for a basic, yet solid introduction to getting your financial house in order. Not too much fluff and the go/no gos serve as an excellent check against the ideal Jeff wants you to aim for. As a CPA I can say that Jeff's tax and retirement advice is spot on as well. No military background required. If you're looking to make the most of your money, Soldier of Finance is a go!

Jeff served his country as a U.S. soldier during the conflict in Iraq. Now he is once again serving the American people by whipping them into financial shape, teaching them to defeat debt, and motivating them to carry out the mission. Jeff shares this financial training in fourteen easy to digest chapters (weeks). He takes what would be boring financial advice and presents it in an interesting and entertaining format. When you are ready to change your financial future and defeat the enemy of debt, pick up a copy of this book and attack debt with the same tactics used by the US military.

This is not your typical personal finance book. The author was in the Iraqi War and is a Certified Financial Planner. Jeff Rose uses his military experiences to present personal finance basics in an interesting and unique way.

The author explains his ideas clearly and shares his personal stories. That combination is one of the reasons this book is both empowering and inspiring.

I think all of us have felt, at some time, that dealing with money is a battle. Even if you've never been in the military, you'll get the basics you need to know to conquer your money woes.

I had the opportunity to read Soldier of Finance and, being a soldier and in the financial world myself, I was extremely impressed with Jeff's book! I was glad to see that the information was easy to digest using real-world experiences from Jeff's life. Most importantly, I enjoyed his Warrior Task sections that spelled out exactly what to focus on and how to improve in each area. Take the time and read it!

Budgeting and home finance fascinates me -- This book was another perspective to attacking the difficult topics of life such as budgets, insurance, investing. Highly recommend this as high unique approach (from a military model) cuts it a little deeper than others have tried on this topic!
