EXELLENT FIRST PERSON SHOOTER,
By A Customer
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Gold Edition) (Video Game)
wow, this game is amazing, i noticed that a few people have given it a bad rating. i, presonally dissagree with them. maybe you should tone down the blood and gore (it gets a little disturbing)but i guess that's all for the better, right? I think it's a very good game and it is also a good party game because of the multiplayer. The graphics are mind-blowing and i was smply blown awa by the gameplay. if you are a fan of first person shooters i would definetly buy this game (weak-stomached beware of the location damage) those of you who don't know what location damage is it's like if you shoot in the leg wit a shotgun, his leg gets injured and/or blown off, so its like a location on your body gets damaged, get it?

I checked up on this game and saw that a few people gave it a bad review. First of all, only a few people gave it a bad review, not enough to be a deciding factor. Secondly, they say it's "overhyped". I haven't seen much hype about this game, I mean it isn't like the overhyped "Devil May Cry" (which I own also and do enjoy, but it is way overhyped). This game is great, I had it on dreamcast and PC and I think it is just as good if not better than either other version. The graphics are beyond great, the backgrounds are good and the weapon effects are flawless. No other game has close to the realism and feel of "Soldier of Fortune". The weapons are great and creative. The weapons all have different affects on the people and the environments. I think telling someone not to get this game is cruel. Games have a funny way of being loved by some, despised by others (eg Silent Hill 2, one of my favorites). I would encourage anyone interrested to try it at least and not take the reviews too seriously since feelings on this game are so diverse. Everyone I know loves this game.

Marvelous stress-reliever.,

This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Gold Edition) (Video Game)
This game is 95% Hand-Eye Coordination / and about 5% Logical Problem-solving.
Wonderful game! Extremely Violent! This could be good - or bad - depending on your philosophy. And by "violent" - I mean limb-dismemberment, agonizing screams, heads blown off, wiggling intestines, slowly growing puddles of blood, etc... Some people criticize this as "having no story" or being a "no-brainer", but I love its simplicity! I'm not saying it's an 'easy' game to win; rather that it's not IMPOSSIBLE to figure out how to play. It is NOT necessary to thoroughly study some 60-page owners' manual before playing this game (I hate that!) Also when you ARE playing the game, there are NO difficult puzzles to solve. Nothing to side-track you. Nothing to stop THAT FABULOUS MOMENTUM!!!! No secret codes to crack. Nothing tricky - It's just blood-&-guts bad-guy killing! You put it in & start playing. SIMPLE! The default controls are easy to remember, but using the SETTINGS, you're able to CHANGE any control you wish. Great stress-reliever. Call me derranged, but I just love it! I've read some reviews that say this game has 'racist overtones'. Personally I don't see that here. The bad guys come in ALL colors of the rainbow. You start off killing a bunch of evil hooligans who've taken over a New York subway station. (although one has a Russian accent - the rest are all white guys with completely American accents - Heck most of them are blonde!) - then in the next round you're killing African soldiers on a train carrying an atomic bomb. Then in the third round you're killing Eastern Europeans. I don't see one particular race or ethnic group being favored over another. EVERYONE DIES! There's room for improvement, but very often I'll get stuck playing this game till the wee hours of the morning - and I've owned this game for a couple years now.

A bit too much hype over this game....,
By A Customer
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Gold Edition) (Video Game)
Let me start by saying I have not played the PC version so I cannot compare the two. However, SOF for PS2 is...well...simply put, really dull. If you have played many first-person shooters, much of the game play will have a been-there-done-that quality, except not as good! The choices available in weapons are uninspired and the enemies are nothing special. Worse yet are the graphics. They are far below what the PS2 is capable of. There is little detail to textures and many objects look too simple. In fact, I have seen better graphics on some PS1 games! Text for the mission briefings is so small, you will need an enormous television to read it without going blind. Unfortunately, this is a port of a PC game that looks like a port of a PC game. Disappointing since so much better is possible (the PS2 version of Half-Life, for example).

Repetitive Corridor Shooter,
By Nick (NH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Gold Edition) (Video Game)
I don't know why I purchased Soldier of Fortune. It's not that I regret it, necessarily, it's just that I had never played it, and I had only read mixed reviews. So I think, what intrigued me, was the controversy over the "gore-zones" this game featured, and how violent it was supposed to be. I guess I wanted to see if the game lived up to the controversy. It does. Soldier of Fortune is a typical First Person Shooter, about a 'one man army' who fights his way through level after level of enemies that look exactly the same. Aside from the extremely graphic violence, you wouldn't be able to tell this game apart from any other mediocre corridor shooter. But the violence is very, very graphic. Heads are split apart, limbs are torn off, intestines and chunks of various other organs protrude from gaping wounds. It is all an attempt to portray violence 'realistically' in a videogame, but after a short period of time it all seems too over-the-top and very unnecessary. Regardless of whether or not the developers were trying to make the game realistic, blood and gore should probably be a bit more limited than this. So aside from this 'gimmick' the rest of the game is very average. The control takes some getting used to, the framerate gets very choppy even with the very bland visuals, and the multiplayer mode seems pretty tacked on. It isn't a horrible game. But it's probably a better rental than a purchase.

Bring on the Gore!!!,

Ya gotta lot it! Pure, unadulterated violence. My kinda game. Yeah, the graphics are way outdated, but the manner in which you can blast body parts off of your enemies is fantastic. I can't get enough of the dismemberment as they scream with their last breaths while being separated limb by limb with hot smoldering shotgun rounds. The "save anywhere" feature is a blessing. Overall, I enjoyed this prehistoric game. I had to cheat to beat the final boss, but besides that, the difficulty level was just right. Oh yeah, stay away from "No One Lives Forever". That game wreaks.

Nothing but a first generation FPS,
By Jon (Denver) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Gold Edition) (Video Game)
There seemed to be quite a bit of hype for this PS2 release (in reality a PC port) and it has unfortunately not lived up to its many expectations. The main promotional factor of this first-person corridor shooter was the realisitic gore. Shoot a person in their leg with your 12 gauge and the limb flies off as the victim hopelessly dances around on their remaining leg screaming and moaning in pain. According to Gamespot (...) SOF offers 26 different hit zones, each with the victim reacting differently as their body gets blown to bits and pieces. Yeah, this an intriguing feature... unfortunately it's the only one the game has to offer and loses its appeal after about 10 minutes of gameplay. First-person shooters attract gamers for two reasons: story mode and multi-player ability. Soldier of Fortune is lacking in both aspects in my opinion. The story mode is bland and dry, as you do nothing but mash the fire button as you stroll through uneventful and boring stages, blowing away enemies who are only smart enough to charge you... as you mow them down with your array of average weaponry. Absolutely no strategy required here. The multi-player mode, which was extremely hyped (over 40 multiplayer maps) has some SERIOUS flaws. If you're dueling it out with a buddy alone, the mode plays decently, but toss in a few bots and the game goes crazy... frame rate seriously drops, the screen becomes choppy and will even occasionally freeze completely, demanding a full reset of the system. The graphics are sub par, as corridors often become grainy and enemies appear square-like and extremely unrealisitc when you approach them. All in all, Soldier of Fortune is reminiscent of a cheap, first-generation Duke Nukem take-off. It provides gamers with a bland story mode, a buggy multi-player option, poor graphics, horrible enemy intelligence, and a fun factor of almost nothing... until you get bored of the repetivness of blowing opponents arms and legs off (which you will... trust me, the novelty does wear off) then the game is completely worthless.

lots of gore, lots of fun, but some hang ups,
By
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Gold Edition) (Video Game)
If you've heard of Soldier of Fortune, then like most people you probably heard of it's notorious reputation. At the time it was released, Soldier of Fortune was arguabley the most graphic, violent game on the market. While it lacked any vulgarity, the realistic depiction of gore really pushed the envelope - it even got condemned as "pornography" (due to violence, not nudity) by the canadian government. This is how I first became curious about the game, and my first time playing it, I was pretty shocked - in a pleasant way. The game uses technology called the "ghoul engine", which drives the games graphical gore fest. This system allows, for all sorts of realistic damage to be done to objects and characters in the game. Nasty looking bullet holes, complete with powder burns, apear where you shoot a bad guy. Blood is plentiful in the game. And of course shoot someone enough times at a joint (or with a high caliber weapon) and you will dismember them. This is actually pretty fun, though somewhat disturbing. Shooting someone in the stomache with a shotgun will even cause intestines to spill out, and shooting someone in the face causes a REALLY nasty mess. While the over the top gore, is the main "feature" of the game, but otherwise the graphics look pretty good considering the year the game was made. Nothing too spectacular, but based on the quake 2 engine the game looks pretty good. Aside from dead bodies with missing legs and pieces of shattered bone potruding froom the stumps, the game has lots of other little graphical details. Bullet holes are different sizes for different weapons, and are different based on the type of surface you fire at. Sound too is pretty good, and bullets hitting metal, not only made nice looking bullet holes, but also sound pretty intense. Besides these features the game is a little lacking in plot, but then again, that's probably not why you're playing this game. The gameplay is a heck of a lot of fun, and as long as you're old enough to handle it, the gore is just a nice little commodity. The problem is the game doesnt feel very "serious" although it tries to. The story gets pretty stupid towards the end, as the end of the game is a "boss fight" with a bad guy who looks like a reject from the GI Joe cartoons. Also the realism found in the graphics is no where in the rest of the game. The selection of weapons is lacking, and the weapons are FAKE made up weapons, that are only LOOSELY based on real military arms at best. Some of the late game weapons are just plain stupid. They would have been better of staying with a gritty military persona for the game. The gameplay is good, and if you want to see lots of blood and guts you'll love this game. But you may be disapointed that the rest of the game lacks character and realism.

Good not great,

The graphics are kinda bad... thats only becuase its some what old. even if the graphics are bad its is extemely realistic. one of the most impresive and gruesome things about this game is the massive amount of blood and gore and the realistic actions of your victoms. like you shoot someone in the chest with the 50 cal sniper rifle and they'll blow in half. shoot someone in the leg or arm with a pistol or weaker gun and they'll grip their arm. shoot it with a shut gun and it will get blown right off. their isn't really a plot to the game but if you love seeing lots of blood and killing stuff get this game.
