I am not sure what the other reviewers are looking for in a game but Soldier Of Fortune is well above average. Perhaps they are comparing it to Halo or Splinter Cell but this one is fun to play. I just bought SoF II: Double Helix last week and love it so far. The graphics may not be the best of the best, but the action is non-stop and this game has a ridiculous number of missions. The missions place you all over the world, so you don't play in the same environment over and over. The Xbox Live aspect is not so great because they aren't many people playing, but...

I am not sure what the other reviewers are looking for in a game but Soldier Of Fortune is well above average. Perhaps they are comparing it to Halo or Splinter Cell but this one is fun to play. Just like Hitman, you can save at anytime, so when you die, you don't have to go all the way back to the beginning of the level. The number of weapons is amazing..especially the OICW. The graphics are on par with Hitman, Ghost Recon, Brute Force and, unlike Commandos 2, you don't have to search for tiny enemies behind trees that look like they were drawn by a 4 year old. It is fast paced without a lot of storyline, such as in Max Payne, etc. You have to use your brain to figure out where to go, what strategy to use, though not as intensely as Indiana Jones. The only complaint I would have is that when you are scrolling on the D pad to change weapons, the bad guys still shoot at you...not fair...they should have more manners.

I just bought SoF II: Double Helix last week and love it so far. The graphics may not be the best of the best, but the action is non-stop and this game has a ridiculous number of missions. The missions place you all over the world, so you don't play in the same environment over and over. The Xbox Live aspect is not so great because they aren't many people playing, but the single player part of the game is worth it, anyway. I think MS may have had this one added just to throw one more game into the Live library, but I don't care because the rest of the game is pretty good.

I've played first-person shooters like Quake III, Red Faction, Unreal Tournament, Allied Assault, and SoF II: Double Helix is just as much fun. So what if the graphics are not as good as Splinter Cell, a lot of games aren't. What this game lacks in technical prowess, it makes up in action. Plus, you have some really cool weapons to choose from and blowing off various body parts is another plus. I have yet to get tired of blowing off someone's head with the shotgun. Sick, but you know you love it.

If you want reassurance, go check out reviews in gaming mags, they'll back this up. Double Helix is a fun FPS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not worth [$$$], June 21, 2003
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (Video Game)
Well, what can I say, I'm not impressed with this game at all. I finished Return to Castle Wolfenstein last month and Brute Force a few weeks ago and have to say I'm disappointed in this game by far in comparison to the ones I've mentioned.

The graphics in this game is mediocre at best, using "gun for hire" difficulty mode, the computer doesn't pose much of a challenge at the beginning levels. I do like the fact you can aim at certain parts of the body 'causing different damage levels at your opponent but then they all die the same way. Artificial Intelligence doesn't stretch very far in this game.

I bought this game to tide me over before the release of "Ghost Recon: Island thunder" - military action game but ended up feeling like I'm playing a cheap version of Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor. Both games which would beat this game hands down in entertainment, graphics, sounds, and value.

The NPCs on this game aren't as smart as Wolfenstein and especially Brute Force. They're none too smart about dodging, hiding and firing back. Somehow, you feel like you're not playing an Xbox game because it's such a setback from the really good FPS games like Wolfenstein, Halo, and Medal of Honor.

If you are a huge huge fan of this series, you probably won't be too happy about what I had to say but if haven't played SOF before, I'd advice you to rent this game first or get Wolfenstein instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY! THEY DESTROYED A GOOD GAME!, June 18, 2003

OMG, if you haven't bought it yet, save yourself. Go rent it at least. I played it for 5 minutes and here are my complaints...

1.You have to play as your gamertag.
2.When you look up and down the cursor moves left to right also.
3.The graphics look like an N64 game.
4.You can't choose any options as far as map rotation, weapons allowed in the game, etc, like you can on PC.
5.You have to push the white button to talk to people even if they are on your team.
6.The triangle shaped indicator on your radar (top right on screen) isn't defined well enough for you to actually tell where you're going. 7.They dumbed down the accuracy of the weapons from the PC version also.
8.Only 12 people at a time no matter what. On PC you can play with up to 60 with no lag issues and easily 30 times better graphics that look borderline real at some points.

This was one of the biggest videogame let downs of all time. They took an awesome game and butchered it and made the graphics look like a gameboy advance.

I have played PC and console games since the early 90's. SOF2 on PC is an awesome game. Great graphics, nice interface, the game physics are nice, the weapons are accurate, just all around great. The Xbox lacks any really good hardware so they have to dumb every PC port down. And they really butchered this one. Do yourself a favor and stick to your PC. Even Halo is due out for PC soon, with every aspect of it far superior to the xbox version.

The only reason I gave it one star is because it is in fact a video game, and I love video games, so the more the merrier, but this one serves no purpose other than to act as a coaster for my beverage while I play the PC version.....

4.0 out of 5 stars A Scar on the xbox's good reputation, July 22, 2003

This review is from: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (Video Game)
first of all, I want to begin with a quote from someone's review:
"this game is a complete insult to the gaming capabilites of the xbox"

The Artificial intelligence, AI, are actually ARTIFICIAL IDIOTS

The weapons are good, and I've only played single player. However there are serious issues with this game and other activision games. They are a terrible company in my opinion, and the only thing they have to boast about is return to castle wolfenstien.
The craphics...err...graphics are ps2 standard. The characters' mouths dont move when talking. The missions dont have depth. And the entire game isnt much but a mess thrown together in a few days. The enemies die VERY unrealisticly, not in the sense of Damage, individual body parts are affected, but in the sense of ragdoll. I shot a soilder and he fell with one hand on his head and one on his his side, which looked like someone relaxing on the beach. I shot him 15 more times and his arms and legs dissapeard. Crouching makes the same amount of noise walking: L a m e!

thats the summary, here are the pros and Cons:

Pros:...let me think...

*Many weapon choices
*relistic sounds (weapons only)

Cons: will it end?

*unrealistic ragdoll
*AI in this game is not Artificial intelligence, its Artificial Idiots
*you can kill one guy in a pair of 2 patrolling, the other wont notice
*Terrible graphics
*random mission Generator has the SAME missions!!!
*Explosions are like flashes of light
*music lack

Those are the big points. This isnt a game for the market, Try again Activision....or dont if youre gonna make another game like this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Close but no cigar, December 22, 2003

This review is from: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (Video Game)
Solier of Fortune II is a pretty good conversion of the PC game of the same title. But that wasn't such a great game to begin with. The XBOX version is more simplified in controls and the gameplay can be adjusted to have "Autoaim" which is basically cheating. Unfortunately I didn't have XBOX live, so I played it single player. It does have a random mission generator (RMG) which adds to the replayability of the game, but the RMG power is limited to changing the layout of the the map and locations of enemy soldiers. The enemy soldiers are terribly stupid. They shoot at you from a distance, hide behind corners, stand still when their friends get killed in front of them. And the enemies cheat. Even if you use the sniper rifle from long distance, they know exactly where you are.

Pros:
+easy controls
+great weapons sound fx
+random mission generator
+cool weapons
+bloody deaths and severed limbs
+tense and good action
+crisp graphics

Cons:
-no split screen play
-A.I. is dumb as a rock
-no stealth/silent weapons
-you can't customize controls
-tons of "Fog" and draw-in
-enemies always know where you are
-night vision goggles are junk, you can't see anything.

If you love First Person Shooters and want to add this game to your collection, it's okay. Just remember that it has some cons that hinders gameplay.

I just got this game and I have to say I'm having a blast with it, although i was a little disapointed in the graphics. The game is sweet, the damage taken by enimies is SICK!! If hit in the head, a chunk of flesh is blown off, leaving a bloody mangled face, AWSOME!! I just wish the graphics could have been a little better, but this should hold me over untill Deus ex 2 hits. So if your into fps, totally pick this one up

1.0 out of 5 stars Lame Lame Lame: Sold it same day I bought it., August 6, 2003

The Ghost Review (San Franicsco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (Video Game)
I know that some people are going to love this game, but just look at how many used ones are already available. This just shows that this game [is bad]. I love Ghost Recon, Halo, Medal of Honor e.t.c. But this game just blows. I sold it back after playing it for 10 minutes.

First of all the interaction between you and the world is [bad]. It's like playing a Nintedo 64 game. You get close to a door and all of a sudden you see a hand. This means you should open the door. No dah. When you crouch and walk it's as if there is an earthquake going on-you rock from left to right instead of just walking forward smoothly like in Ghost Recon (or any other game for that matter). The crouch walking may seem like a lame excuse to dismiss a game, but believe me it's extremely annoying during gameplay.
Loading: It takes way to long to load levels. The game is way to simple and easy. Switching weapons is too complicated. The graphics are horrible. I can't believe that they were so bad. One star is way too many for this game, it really deserved 0 stars. It doesn't even deserve a review, but this game was so bad that I couldn't help myself.
I would really hold on to my money and wait for all the new games that are coming out in the next 4 months prior to Christmas. If you have to get something and you already have Splinter Cell, Halo, Ghost Recon, and Medal of Honor get Hitman 2, or one of the James Bond Games. Not only are they cheap, but they are also good.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's the guns that make it interesting., June 21, 2010
By
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (Video Game)
Ah, where do I begin? The storyline is a bore, the voice acting for the most part muttered and terrible, and the levels infuriatingly long and complex. I played "Conflict: Vietnam" on Hard and it was nowhere near so much of a pain in the butt. And before anybody starts getting on me for disliking long and complex levels, know that I played "Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" and loved it. "Double Helix" levels got nothing on the massive depth and scale of Morrowind. But I bought this game, yes, own it still, and to a degree like it. That's mostly because there is a weapons inventory so huge I really don't find time to use or get to know all of what it contains. The number of ways you have to destroy your enemies is quite... numerous. There's at least eight grenades, an RPG-7, a grenade launcher mounted on the M-4, and one of those big grenade launcher things with a revolving magazine. The game also has an interesting graphics feature, one I have never seen before or since- you can shoot off bits and pieces of persons in many many ways. The gamemakers clearly put a lot into that, and it is quite entertaining to, ha ha, destroy the foe in so many ways and then close up to see just where and how you got him.

It's the firepower and what you can do with it, to me, that makes this game worth playing. I never cared much about the story- it flips and flops back and forth, and everybody mumbles so much it makes the mumbling problems of the Godfather seem insignificant. Hey, at least in there it was just one guy. In here it's everybody. If you want a game with a true mercenary spirit, play the two "Mercenaries" games and "Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries". In there money is the primary object you fight for and nothing else. In here you fight for a contractor whose purpose is so in line with the Pentagon's I'm amazed you don't take contracts from the CIA and no one else.

I also had a fantastic time playing the demo of this on my laptop in high school. [GHS] Hansi, that was me. So, it's partly a kind of nostalgia that helps me to like "Double Helix" as well.

So, do I recommend this game? Kinda. But like I said, it's the guns that make it interesting. Not the plot or voice acting.

One last note- "Double Helix" once had both online play and downloadable content, but Live for the original Xbox has been shot down as of April 15, 2010- so, RIP, Xbox Live for the Xbox. Too bad.

Beware the night vision and thermal goggles, folks. Frightful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money, June 12, 2007
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix (Video Game)
I bought this game with somewhat low expectations and I was still let down. I would consider this to be the " Let down game of the year". There is no excitement at all and you feel cheated out of your pesonal time if you play it for to long. I played for only about 2 hours and I was bored stiff. You can spend you money in so many better ways on amazon. If you have not played Shadow Ops - Red Mercury then I suggest that you buy it over this. I spent $1.38 on that game and I have played it through twice already.

Before you buy Soldier of Fortune, understand this, if this game were formated for Super Nintendo then it would be a whole other story about the quality of this game. This is not a game that should be in the Xbox line up. The movement is slow, poor graphics, numerous glitches, and over all it's repetitive. You cannot interact with any of the backgrounds, you can't even put bullet holes in many of the walls. There is one way and one way only to go through the missions. The game may as well move your character for you while you shoot all the nearly 2-D targets that appear out of thin air. Buy another game, any other game.
