A Fun Shooter,

This game was a fun rental.I beat it in one night (about 4-5 hours) and found myself playing again on the hardest difficulty. Soldier Of Fortune brings back FPS to its fundamental roots, which is good ol' fashioned no-frills shooter ,that to my surprise was actually a satisfying game. Although the premium price tag for a game this short is a stretch, I can't see paying the full retail for such a short game, but its definitley worth renting for a playthrough. The graphics are decent ,although they might look better on my high-end HDTV than other HDTV's .The overall ambiance of the game is nice. In one level you walk on wooden ramps all along side a mountain in the jungle with waterfalls in the distance, its actually moderately scenic. And the explosions look pretty good in the very first level you encounter. The game isn't too hard either ,even on the hardest difficulty Im finding a rather enjoyable time of it,and the bosses aren't very challenging, but some have there times when there tough. But the overall difficulty of the game is satisfyingly good as you will encounter some flanking .I love the ability to put a scope on just about any weapon , this makes for a great advantage over the enemies you encounter. Go into just about any mission with an AK47 scoped and you'll have plenty of ammo to scavage, since thats the weapon of choice of your foes. The guns handle very well, almost too well too the disliking of your foes. I also like that there's no medpac scavaging & hoarding ,you simply regain health by taking cover ala halo & gears. Also I don't think I've dismembered so many body parts since playing the first Bloodrayne; and Solider of Fortune:Payback even makes FEAR look like sesame street in the 'loss of limbs dept'. Shoot an enemies leg and arm off and you'll see him crawl away with the remaining 2 limbs , all the while still trying to shoot you,and some even manage to pop off a last round or too at you before they bleed out. This game is very high on the 'dismemberment' list of games as every foe will manage to lose a head, arm,or torso from your Assault rifle of choice. Another great thing is right from the get-go can customize your rifle before going into a mission. I highly suggest equipping an AK47 with a scope as you'll find plenty of ammo, and you never have to lose your scoped-weapon mid-mission because of ammo supply being out, with exception to the last level.Overall this game is a no-frills FPS that just has the right amount of equal parts ,gameplay, graphics, and overall fun that makes a solid FPS. The levels shading through the trees reminds me of some of the GRAW2 multiplayer maps and RSV maps, although much less open and more linear, but equally decent eye candy. Is there any slo-mo effect ,or timeshifting powers ,or team managment,or some thrown in vehicle on rails level..No Not at all ..Soldier Of Fortune is just a solid no-frills shooter that's just satisfying enough that you won't care its a basic shooter. Its just pure simple shooter fun,and sometimes that's all you need after a day's hard work. Rent this one .PEACE

Let me start off by saying this game is NOT Call of Duty 4, nor should it be compared to COD4 or any other game for that matter. This game is a simple, straight forward shooter with above average graphics, pretty good sound, and fun gun play. Yes, the graphics could have been better, and the story is incredibly ridiculous, but this game was sort of a low hype, under the radar type of title. It wasn't meant to blow you out of the water, or make you forget you have any other games. It's just a fun game you pick up, and start blowing off people's heads / arms/ whatever with.
I really like this game despite having also bought Kane and Lynch, COD4, Halo 3, and Assassin's Creed. I don't want to compare it to those games because this is JUST A GAME! I probably should have waited for this game to drop in price to maybe 40 or 30 bucks, because I don't think I could honestly recommend this game to anyone for 60 dollars, but hey, it's fun. It's not some giant blockbuster hype bomb, and if you take it for what it is (a mindless, fun shooter) then you'll enjoy it, instead of making yourself miserable because it's not CoD4 or Halo.

Exactly what I expected...,

I've read a lot of reviews saying bad things about this game and I can imagine how someone not familiar with the SOF franchise would be disappointed in this title when compared to other shooters on the market today.
Being a fan of the previous SOF games I already knew what to expect: Moving from point A to point B and merrily blowing the crap out of anything that got in my way in an extremely gory fashion. Games like this have a special place in the gaming library. Sometimes between deep & cerebral games you may feel like you need a break from all the thinking and puzzle-solving and you just want to blow s#@t up... and that is where games like this are perfect. I wouldn't have paid full price for this, but now that the price has dropped to well below platinum hits price it's easy to recommend to anyone who has an appreciation for mindless FPS action. The game isn't without it's faults. There's no option to play in fullscreen mode - it's letterbox only - and the in-game messages seem to use a very small font and are almost impossible to read. I'd have also liked to have the option to re-map some of the controls, but you only have 3 preset layouts to choose from. The mounted weapons in the game seemed to be way less accurate than the ones you carry and I tended to avoid using them. Another thing that I didn't care for was that although you get to choose which weapons you start the mission with there didn't seem to be any ammo available to reload them during the missions, so you'll most likely wind up picking up dropped enemy weapons and completing the mission with those. A lot of people complain that the enemies are very hard to see. Well, did you expect them to wear blaze orange hunting caps and vests or something? Although the AI isn't on the scale of Halo, I don't think they're quite that stupid. Basically for the current price, this game is good, brainless fun. SOF fans shouldn't be disappointed.

I don't know what to say to all of these negative reviews... Mind you, this game is nowhere NEAR as good Resident Evil 4 or Call of Duty: World at War... but it's just REALLY fun. There's something so addictive and infectious about blasting your way through wave after wave of terrorists, getting to the extraction point and progressing to a new environment. This game is basically the gameplay of the old Delta Force games or Battlefield 1942 in a next gen package. Here's my breakdown:
SOUND and MUSIC- 9/10 Almost perfect. The guns are very satisfying, as are the impact and environmental sounds. The music is perfectly fitting (although nothing as good as Gears or the RE series.) Very nice! VOICE ACTING-5/10 This is the games weakest point and it borders on ridiculous... Due to the campy (Rambo meets Far Cry) nature of the game, however, it works just fine. GAMEPLAY-9/10 Load, destroy, repeat. Age old yet so addictive. GRAPHICS- 10/10 Perfectly stunning. Every bit as good as the new COD games (in some ways better. The gore effects and rock texturing are beautiful.) CONTROLS-10/10 Exactly like COD. No problems whatsoever. OVERALL SCORE- A- I highly recommend this game to the action fans. Sure, RE, COD, Halo and Far Cry are far more mature... But they'll always be there! Relive the old school with this gory and intense shoot em' up.

This game is not as bad as most reviews are saying. The customization options alone give this game almost unlimited replayability. When I first started playing the game I didn't like it, but once I figured out how to equip scopes and other options I was blown away. The only thing about this game that sucks is the 3 page manuel. The graphics are great, though not up to call of duty 4 standards, but I beat COD4 hours before I finished this gem. I'll prob. trade in call of duty4 way before I get tired of this game. At least give it a rent and be sure to equip a scope!!!!

This was a game I was able to pick up for $18 from an individual seller and it came free with Rambo First Blood. Its not as bad as the reviews said, but it's still not great. I beat the game in around 5 hours on the hardest difficulty. It's fun but very generic and not really much else to do after you've completed a playthrough.
Overall 7.0-7.5

With all the good FPS games on the 360 there is nothing in this game to justify a 60 dollar price tag. I couldn't have been more disappointed in a title as I was in this one. The story is pointless, the AI horrible, the voice acting and level design all just as bad. You spend the majority of the game waiting for a wave of bad guys to spawn and run out in front of you. You then normally shoot those bad guys by aiming at the first one and firing a couple busts. Then you move on to the next spawn point, occasionally some bad guys will spawn behind you and usually at the end of the level you get to fight off a couple waves of bad guys.
There is a good selection of weapons when you start each level and you are allowed to customize them to a point, but since almost all your enemies throughout the game use the AK47 you almost always finish the level with it anyway. Which works out because there is very little difference between how the weapons handle and fire. It feels as though they are all the same with different skins on them. The level designs are incredibly linear. You will also spend a fair amount of time hung up on door frames, barrels and anything else you can think of. Your highly trained mercenary is unable to jump over any real obstacles. The only thing this game has going for it is the huge amount of blood and violence, but it really isn't enough to carry it through. The good thing is the single player campaign takes about four hours to make your way through. The online play is nothing at all spectacular. If you are willing to deal with all the bad you can lose yourself in the pointless bloodshed for a couple hours. Though I would recommend a rental in that case, just so you don't feel so bad about throwing your money away.

It's not that good of a game. If you're just looking for a cheap game, go for gears of war or something, this one isn't that fun. It's a very bad Call of Duty knock off. The dialouge is kind of stupid too. The visuals are good though, that's about the only good thing about this game.
