This game is what most people would call a mind-less shooter but I for one enjoy it. Most of the game is spent shooting and killing soliders that react very realistily, I.E you shoot a enemy in the leg, he gropes his leg and limps around, you shoot a guy in the stomach, he bends over in pain. 5.0 out of 5 stars Kick-arse gib fest, December 6, 1999

The game also has a lot of blood in it. You shoot a guy in the stomach with a shotgun, his guts hang out, you shoot a guy in the head with a .44 pistol, it explodes. If you shoot a guy in the middle with a pistol, you can see where it comes out of the back of his body. You shoot a guy in the head with a .9mm, the back of his head explodes. This game is not for the easily sickend or for the young, but it is very fun and very entertaining. The game also has great grapics, very detailed textures and uses bump-mapping to make bricks look like bricks and cement look like cement. This game requires a 3d accelerater card and at least a 300 for it to run good, but once you get it running, you'll love it. This is one of the funnest games I've played in a long time, and all I played was the OEM 3 level version that came with my mouse.

Well, thats all I got to say, I'm going to be getting this game the first day it comes out, be looking for y'all on multiplayer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Thing Since Half-Life!, April 19, 2000

As of now, this is possibly the most realistic 3D shooter I've ever played. No kids allowed here! (There's a Wal-mart (censored) version, but it's not as fun) The graphics are excellent, and everything could have happened. Your objective is to destroy 4 nukes that were stolen. No aliens, zombies, plasma guns, or super death rays are in here! The weapons are even modeled after real-life ones, for crying out loud! Of course, the funniest thing is the "gore-zones." Depending on where you shoot a guy, a gun shot or a knife mark will appear there. Blowing off half of a guy's head with a shotgun can be the UNTIMATE stress reliever. Sure, it's more violent that even Kingpin, but in SoF, an F-word isn't inserted casually into every conversation. However, SoF is not perfect. The AI can be quite stupid at times, with people running in circles, or ignoring you entirely. Plus, in the later winter stages, there is a fog which can get really annoying when the AI can see you, but you can't see them. Other than those problems, I think SoF is an otherwise flawless game.

5.0 out of 5 stars The guy who thought that SoF was like Blood2 is wrong, April 11, 2000
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (CD-ROM)
The whole reason that this game is so great is because we havescripted cutscenes that keep you in the game the entire time, muchlike Half-Life. The graphics are terrific, and here we have a game where limbs can actually come off one at a time, or weapons and/or equipment can be shot off. The accuracy of a few of the weapons is borderline ridiculous, but when you figure in the fact that this game is one of the first to have time-delay bullet impacts, it evens out. If you are trying to circle someone in multiplayer, you have to correct for their movement and shoot where they are going to be, and not where they are.

There isn't a ridiculous storyline, and everything in the game could have happened. There were no aliens and no secretly developed weapons. Just nukes. Sure, the microwave gun is a little out there, but weapons like that gun exist and have the same effect, albeit to a lesser extent. It's not necessarily filled with the exotic visuals as Half-Life was, and it doesn't have the multiplayer variability that Unreal Tournament does, but UT was built around multiplay. Soldier of Fortune was built around the life, realism, and possible work of a real man named John Mullins. This is what they tried to simulate, and they succeeded wonderfully. People who can't appreciate this game are in the wrong PC game genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT FOR THE KIDS..., April 23, 2000
By
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (CD-ROM)
This game is great, as long as you have the guts to play it. The game is full of juicy ultra-violence, and it's definitely not for everybody. The game uses a modified (heavily) Quake II engine. It utilizes GHOUL technology, which allows for 26 (wow) target-specific zones on each enemy model. Each has its own programmed pain and death movements, making for frighteningly real gameplay. The weapons are great, ranging from realistic bullet slingers, to space age microwave pulse guns that fry the enemy from the inside. You may need to tweak the graphics options a little to fit your machine, but I found the game performs excellent on just about any system. The game does not feature software rendering so IF YOUR CARD DOES NOT SUPPORT 3D ACCELERATION THIS GAME WILL NOT WORK. It also does not offer any custom installation options, so you're forced to drop 800 megs of hard drive space. Sound is impressive and realistic, and the team did a very good job with the spatial effects. Gameplay is smooth and great transitions are made using impressive cut scenes. As for replay value, the game can be blown through in a few hours of heavy play, but the sheer fun of the game keeps you coming back for more. Definitely a great purchase, just keep it away from the kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved HALFLIFE and now I love this!, June 4, 2000
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (CD-ROM)
I have played a lot of games. I can tell you that Soldier of Fortune is one of a kind. Some may disagree with me, but I say that it's the first realistic first person shooter next to maybe half life. I love the fact that if you shoot a guy in the leg, he hops around on one leg, and head shots are automatic death. I love the fact that when you cut a guy, there are actual slice marks and not bullet holes or nothing at all. I love the fact that there are 'actual' weapons to choose from instead.. say.. a worm shooter made out of an alien's spleen. Not to mention the great story line. When I look at a game like this compared to say, Quake 3.. I think, 'Why am I so bored with Quake3?' The reason is this.. Quake 3's single player stinks... If you want to enjoy it and many other games like it, you need a cable modem and play a decent deathmatch. However, Soldier of Fortune's single player mode was very well thought out with a planned storyline. The effect and suspense that the levels create is sometimes spooky... I am always catching myself tilting or moving my head so I can try to peek around that corner so I can see the bad guy, and then jumping when he appears behind me. If you want a game that doesn't require a cable modem to enjoy the game, soldier of fortune is a good bet.

Ok, I know your wondering why the 2 stars. Let me explain. Just to get it out of the way, yes the graphics are astounding, and the body-sensitive damage on the enemys makes for a pretty fun way to kill a person (especially when you cap someone in the "nether regions"), plus, the weapons are pretty cool. Now, to the less than stellar aspects of the game: AI (artificial intelligence): Its [bad]. I guess I was spoiled with Half Life, but when I rush into a room full of baddies, let some shots fly, then run around a corner, I expect at least one or two try to come after me. Never happened in this game ( OK, maybe ONCE). Like fools, they just kept shooting at the wall...over and over and over and over....I think you get my point. Storyline: It can hold its own, although it didn't draw me in at all. There are no real puzzles in the game, and the ones they do have stink. There was actually a cut scene where I was told I had to "Find the helipad switch!", where I then walked into the NEXT room and *lo and behold!* it was right there! They could have done a better job than that. Level Layout: Absolutely, completely, unequivocally linear. Very, very few options to make any choice in the path you choose to get through the levels. Its usually a straight "path" to the end of the level, which takes away from the experience of the game. Every door other than the one you need to take to get to the end of the level is *Locked*. Not too cool. I know it sounds like I'm a party pooper over here, but these are the things that can really make or break a game, and they need to be stated. It is fun to shoot enemies in different parts of their bodies and see area-sensitive damage, but that novelty runs out, and you wind up just rushing through the game pretty quick. Better map layout and storyline could have really boosted this game from "mediocre" to "fantastic"...unfortunately, it just turnes out to be another average FPS. Buy it if you want, but don't expect to be blown away.

4.0 out of 5 stars This game is truly frightening!, October 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (CD-ROM)
well, having just bought a new compaq presario 800MHz to replace my Dell Dimension 233Mhz i decided to take advantage of my opportunity for playing a high-preformance game (i.e. something with good 3D quality) So i chose SoF from the shelf at the local computer games store because they were sold out of half-life and i needed a game desperately! My first reaction is yes this was a good buy.. very real- smooth- great graphics etc.. however on the first level especially this game is quite disturbing. the first level is a dark subway- which i would imagine to have some awful smells- occupied by crazy terrorists who are shooting and whipping hostages as you walk through the level. the gore factor is crazy, especially at close quarters with the shotgun. Now I am a pretty typical gamer- R6, Rogue, Swat3 etc... but the gore did take some getting used to... i am on about the 5th level i think, taking place in Iran and by now i am less affected by the death sequences and more worried about how to beat the level, so by now the game is pretty much perfect. one downside to the game that i must adress is the Quake-Doom aspect to it (wreckless shooting, only after being hit by a couple thousand rounds u die) the game would be more frightening if you really had to worry about bad guys and getting shot and more was at risk etc...

Over all a great game-great graphics- gameplay- guns- explosions- oh yea and realistic death sequences

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a Game of the Year!, March 29, 2000
By
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (CD-ROM)
I have played almost every 1st person shooter out there. When Half-Life came around, it blew all the rest away. When UT came out, it took the lead. Move over you guys. A new ones in now. SoF! The best one of them all! This game has everything that a 1st person fan will love. Realistic violence, great story/plot, and tons of non-stop action! If you thought RogueSpear was good, this is your next game! This, out of all games, is definitly a Game of the Year on my list.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Generation of Games!, April 9, 2000
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (CD-ROM)
When the demo of thi game came out I was pumped. Then i playedthe demo, a bit dissapointed. So I had a few extra bucks to spend so Ibought SoF. Was I dissapointed? HECK NO!This game is cutting edge technology! Using an upgraded version of the QuakeIII engine, Ghoul, it gives the most splended graphics any game has had so far. There are many weapons. A lot of weapons you must actually slavage off the battlefield. Most weapons deliver a massive punch, and some dont. Each one is very fun to play around with esspecially the Heavy Machine Gun (If you've played the demo and seen the cut scene, the soldiers dressed in black have them). Multiplayer isn't anything special, and it shouldn't really interest anyone. One thing I found rather interesting about this game is that when you have a feeling that you are going to beat the game, some guy coms up with more objectives and you go on some more suicide missions. Overall this game is a super game and it should se the benchmark for ANY FPSs coming out in the near and far future. END

5.0 out of 5 stars As Real as they have made them, March 15, 2000

This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (CD-ROM)
This game offers an adult action gamer everything they could ask for. A very diverse selection of weapons and a solid action packed story. You play Mullins a mercenary for hire whom has to recover some stolen nuclear warheads. Your travels bring you to all corners of the globe to battle terrorists. The best part of the game are the superb graphics and AI especially on higher difficulty levels. The Gouhl redering system also alows hit specific damage (ie. shoot them in the head they are dead, in the hand they drop the gun in the leg they hop around holding it in pain.) Each mission is introduced fully by a excellent animated cutscene and the player truly feels immersed in the game from start to finish. If you love action games and shooters you should consider Soldier of Fortune, in fact it should be #1 on your game list.
