I really liked this book, although it is not a genre I generally choose to read. This historical novel by Robert Mackay is very well written and well researched, and tells the story of a World War I soldier in the cavalry. It was a horrible war, and some of the book is difficult to read because it depicts the suffering men and horses had to endure, but I came away from it with a greater understanding of the sacrifices our grandfathers and great grandfathers made during those years.

The story is built around the relationship between a reluctant young soldier and his girl at home, and a personal conflict between the young man and an officer from his home town. Well worth reading!

"Soldier of the Horse" is a great read for anyone interested in the Canadian experience in World War I where the modern technology of machine guns brought a bloody and gruesome conclusion to the glorious tradition of horse mounted charges which had been an integral part of warfare for centuries. Robert Mackay's writing is realistic and clear as he describes a Winnipeg man's experience of leaving behind the love of his life to engage in a struggle that was more horrific than either he or his compatriots could have ever imagined.

Format: Paperback
A Canadian author writes a compelling story about a Canadian soldier involved one of the last cavalry charges of WWI. Good research and characterization in this very readable novel that helped me understand this aspect of warfare and relate to Tom, the protagonist. It's gritty and violent, but so human, and has good tension and pacing.
Not surprisingly, this novel won the IPPY gold medal.
Highly recommended for those who read historical military fiction.
