4.0 out of 5 stars A good magazine to keep an eye on, December 9, 2002
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Magazine)
Soldier of Fortune is not a great magazine, but it is a good magazine to keep an eye on. The articles generally include interviews with prominent politicians and military figures, reviews of guns, and news stories and research pieces. The news stories tend to come heavily from the right, and the conclusions they come to sometimes sound like conspiracy theories, but it is good that some people lean forward on the news to try to put things together. Also usually included is a piece on a military operation of the past, reviewing tactics, equipment, and personalities involved. I enjoy reading this magazine and have learned some things from it. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the front lines of WW III, June 22, 2003
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Magazine)
Yes, you read correctly, World War III. That is what we are fighting right now. Soldier of Fortune brings coverage from all over the world that you don't get in the mainstream press. And the talking heads on TV certainly don't mention some of what SOF covers.

In every issue, there is a Terrorism Sitrep which gives a run-down on various arrests, attacks and other details related to worldwide terrorism. It's the first thing I open to because in 2 or 3 minutes, I can get a feel for what's going on.

Further, they gave (and still give) excellent coverage to the wars in Afganistan and Iraq. But they still cover what mercs are doing in Western Africa and how a small group of guys is trying to make a difference on the US-Mexican border (Ranch Rescue).

All-in-all, a great magazine. Definitely on the cutting edge with its stories, giving the reader information not readily accessible. If you are a military person, and/or concerned about what's REALLY going on in the world, you should read this. If you claim to be a patriotic American, you should read this to find out what the mainstream press won't tell you about the Mexican army, illegal drug runners, and the invasion of our southern border. READ THIS MAGAZINE!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different View, March 13, 2003
This review is from: Soldier of Fortune (Magazine)
Though I live in the UK (England if you prefer) I subscribe to Soldier of Fortune, because I admire it's forthright, often outspoken views. Though there are military magazines published here they tend to be either factual (planes or tanks), or historical. SoF's passionate defence of America and it's constitution, and individual rights is something you do not see very often this side of the ocean! Our magazines tend to be more reserved. If only the UK could produce something as patriotic. Opinion aside SoF has sharp colour photos, and more important articles covering topics which are simply ignored by the mainstream media.
Heartily recommended. If you in the USA it's a bargain!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good magazine, May 13, 2010

Another reviewer says SoF is not a great magazine; that is one of the most truthful statements written in Amazon.com. However, it is a good magazine and if you're politically correct then this not the magazine for you.

The "sit-rep" is pretty good and gives a snap shop of the "threat" situation that traditional America faces. This is fairly good. My only complaint is the world situation is fairly fluid and when the magazine publishes it the information can be fairly state.

Then again SoF does an excellent job of covering two things: after actions of all military operations and covering gear. With the exception of NRA's "American Rifleman" magazine and "Shotgun news" the weapon reviews in this magazine are second-to-none. In every issue a review is given of a pistol, shotgun, or rifle. A reader can expect no-nonsense reviews from SoF with full reports of a weapon's MOA. SoF did a recent review of Aimpoint's 9mm carbine, had nothing but good things to say about it, and they asked the manufacturer why the magazine was only 10 rounds. That is called doing your homework; a reader will enjoy the facts. Also, SoF will do reviews of specialized military gear. This will be of interest to military buffs or personnel who actually work as contractors in the field. If a person is former military they will stick to uniforms and equipment that they know that works.

SoF gives excellent background on current military operations. If you're Islamic or have sympathies with the terrorist causes this definitely isn't the magazine for you. Also, this magazine will tell the truth on some present US military debacles. This magazine will not pull any punches with the upper command problems with the U.S. military. Furthermore, this magazine gave a full write up on how Russian forces moved into a former independent nation and seized a huge stash of American military equipment, one of the worst set backs for American forces in years.

Now, SoF will bluntly tell a reader that this magazine considers the present Obama administration a mere cut above the political leadership of either Libya or Cuba. But the people who buy this magazine pretty much subscribe to this political point of view so that statement will reinforce their belief in getting the magazine.

The magazine has several good points but it does have a few debits. Some of their advertisers are a little weird. But they have to accept the ads that help pay the bills. The articles could be better written. But most of their readers - Marines, Soldiers, or the hard-core types - will not mind that at all. Indeed, they enjoy it.

I will say this for SoF: You don't have to worry about any "double barrel smugness" that one gets from magazines like The Atlantic Monthly . That is worth the price of the magazine for that alone.

So, don't feel bad and get the magazine. The information is good and, at $35 per year, it's well worth it just for the articles and information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best for Real Info, May 7, 2005

This Mag covers everything from our troops serving in combat and occupation missions to the best new equipment. SOF also gives you a rundown on different weapons and stories of guys who lived to tell their own personal war stories. The World SITREP column in the centerfold gives a look at global stability or lack thereof and you can read about terrorist arrests and threats you are not being told about through mainstream media. The contributing editors are in the places they are writing about and are not there on assignment for the Mag, but are there helping to better the cause, so that what you read is accurate and fresh. I have been reading SOF since I was in 6th grade in the early 80's and I can remember reading about Osama bin Laden well before most Americans ever even heard the word Taliban. Read it and be up to speed it's a great source of info.
BTW you will save a lot of money by using the subscription card in the Mag

Read this magazine alot also, the only downside is the page flipping from the front to the back to keep reading an artical. Other then that its great reading, love the view point this magazine puts forward. A Conservative magazine for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars The real deal, on the ground, in the action., December 20, 2004

I have subscribed to SOF as a means to stay informed on the WOT. As expected, SOF correspondents are in the action, participants, not only reporters. Much of the good being done in Iraq and Afghanistan never reaches the mainstream media, but SOF reports on it and tells the truth. I find the Terrorism Sitrep particularly helpful, and the reporting of the 'forgotten wars' all over the Third World as well as US supported counterinsurgency actions in South America are well reported.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best magazine about today's wars, January 22, 2011

I'm a Brazilian, single and I was born in 1970. I never left my country, except for some weeks. I read just a few issues of this amazing American magazine. Please, I read many other American magazines, also about weapons and wars, but Soldier of Fortune is the best of them. If you want to read what is really happening in places such as Iraq or wants to know what really are Iran, Somalia, Venezeula or even Argentina and Brazil, this is a great choice.
For any war happening today, this is the best magazine to read. It seems that it doesn't sells good, but this is the best magazine in its area.
