Book Description

March 15, 2011

The controversial history of the modern freelance soldier—from the Cold War to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The freelance soldier, or mercenary, whether fighting for money or reputation or an adopted cause, has always been a fascinating and controversial phenomenon. Now, as a result of the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan, he has become not simply a mercenary but a vital part of modern and privatized warfare. For some, he is a heroic figure, doing the work governments are too squeamish to admit to; for others, he is a bloodthirsty killer.

In Tony Geraghty’s startling history, he sheds new light on their activities, which has until now been shrouded in secrecy. Many of the soldiers have spoken to the author about their experiences for the first time, revealing details of operations that have never before been reported in the media. 16 pages of black-and-white illustrations

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Geraghty clearly demonstrates that as the major powers have been cutting their regular forces, the freelance soldier may well turn out to be the supreme arbiter of outcomes in such trouble areas as Iraq, Afghanistan, and throughout the Third World. One of the best and most authoritative books on the subject.” (London Herald )

“Starred Review. This serious study should find its way to most readers of military history. An outstanding survey of the modern mercenary.” (Library Journal )

“The subject is fascinating. . . . A shadowy, brutal world.” (The New York Times Book Review )

Soldiers of Fortune May 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
I lost faith in this book being a good read on page 1 where the author writes the following. "Since 9 September 2001 - the event now known universally as 9/11 - the world has been taken over by a global war on terror,..." The last time I checked 9/11 stood for September 11, 2001, 9 being the month of September and 11 being the 11th day of September. How could you publish something like this. There are other details that are flat out wrong in the book. The author lists a Colonel Tom Beckwith as being the founder of Delta Force when in reality it was Charlie Beckwith who wrote a book about the subject. If the author is getting easily found facts wrong I wonder how much actual fact is written in the book and how much is flat out fiction.

This book deals mainly with goverments avoiding ties to mercenary forces and not to the actual subject of mercenaries in modern warfare. I would avoid this book unless you can't get to sleep.

I bought the book January 21, 2010

Originally, I had picked up this book at the library. I like Geraghty's work - have his book on Great Britain's SAS - so was prepared for a well researched and informative read. And it was that. Geraghty traces use of the mercenary from Pinkerton days to the present. In fact, it has the first sensible discussion of the Iran-Contra affair. He writes well and, as an ex-Para and military reporter, knowledgeably. Both American and British use of free lance soldiers are discussed and their value as "deniables". For those interested, listed are the major British private security agents. (I am familiar with one organization, having trained with Centurion for a week last year.) Anyway, the upshot is, I returned the book to the library and promptly bought it. It's a keeper!
