Book Description

February 1, 2007
When Laura DiPrete's husband joined the National Guard, she believed that he'd aid in the recovery efforts of natural disasters or engage in some other type of non-threatening duty. Never could she have prepared for his deployment to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom, shortly after the traumatic events of September 11, 2001. In an effort to find strength in a time of uncertainty, Laura must look to her family, friends, and her faith in God to guide her through the ordeal. The Soldiers Left Behind explores the trials, lessons, and challenges faced by a military spouse and offers inspiration to those facing the daunting possibility of having a loved one deployed. For the first time, the story of the military families left behind is told and their strength, loyalty, and perseverance prove astoundingly admirable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Soldiers opinion, November 27, 2009
This review is from: The Soldiers Left Behind (Paperback)
Laura DePrete has taken the time to be the voice of many thousands of `Soldiers Left Behind' that otherwise would never be heard from or might remain misunderstood. She introduced us to her world and the decisive moments in her life that changed its course forever. She supported her husband John's decision to serve in the Army, but never expected his service to be part of the driving force challenging her very way of life. Laura has expressed her deep respect for those who chose to serve in our military by telling not only her inspiring story, but the stories of her closest allies in the Family Support Group. Laura realized her greatest fears when John showed concern how the deployment training was going when he said, "... it was so critical that he got his men trained, because it could make the difference of him coming home alive or dead."

Even though the situation was dire, Laura did not quit or turn inward. As a soldier who deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom, I'm thankful that Laura has explained in such a subtle way how to prepare for, live through, and try to restore a family to some form of normalcy after such a trying experience. I recommend this book to any family who is facing a deployment as both a learning tool and example that life's greatest obstacles can be overcome. God Bless our troops and the United States of America.
