5.0 out of 5 stars A story with warmth, hope, and humor, January 6, 2008
This review is from: A Soldier's Promise (Wings of Refuge, Book 1) (Love Inspired #430) (Mass Market Paperback)
Cheryl Wyatt's debut novel A Soldier's Promise is a fast-paced tale filled with warmth, hope, and humor. Teacher Amber Stanton is in the midst of adopting Bradley, a sick, neglected student when pararescue jumper Joel Montgomery makes Bradley's wish come true, and in the process gives Amber a wish or two of her own. Don't miss this feel good, delightful story of two people who seek God's will for their lives and discover God will give them all they need to recover from their painful pasts and to fulfill His purpose in a way they never dreamed possible. I look forward to reading Wyatt's next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars At Ease ... And Enjoy A Great Read!!, February 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Soldier's Promise (Wings of Refuge, Book 1) (Love Inspired #430) (Mass Market Paperback)
This debut novel by Cheryl Wyatt is the first "military" tale I have ever read, but I guarantee it won't be the last! Is there anything more romantic than a man in uniform? Not unless you're talking about the hunky hero from Ms. Wyatt's book, Joel Montgomery, an honorable man with a haunted past. From the first page when Special Forces soldier Joel free-falls into Amber Stanton's life and that of her eight-year-old student, Bradley (a cancer patient), both my stomach--and my heart--did flips! And I have to tell you, it was "high flying" from then on out. But this well-written read is more than just a great romance! It's a heart-tugging relationship between a sick little boy without a family and the two main characters who fall in love with him as well as each other. But most of all, it's a story of spiritual healing so well-done, that the reader is quietly lifted in the process while enjoying a truly delightful debut novel. No surprise here that ROMANTIC TIMES gave A SOLDIER'S PROMISE its highest honors with 4-1/2 stars and "Top Pick" status. Cannot wait to read the sequel, Ms. Wyatt, so keep `em coming. And that's an order!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heart-warming Tale, January 26, 2008

This review is from: A Soldier's Promise (Wings of Refuge, Book 1) (Love Inspired #430) (Mass Market Paperback)
I absolutely loved A Soldier's Promise by Cheryl Wyatt. I'm an avid reader, so I am "choosy" about which books I like. This is so well written, however, that it's hard to believe that it is the author's debut novel. The tale of Amber, Joel, and Bradley comes to life through believable characters and a dynamic plot that makes the book hard to put down. The romantic aspect of the book was expertly written too-- Amber and Joel both like each other a lot, but had things in their past that they had to deal with before they could really commit to each other. I love the fact that it never gets raunchy or inappropriate, though, and that the characters rely on God first and foremost. I am definitely recommending this book to all my friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your parachute!, January 25, 2008
This review is from: A Soldier's Promise (Wings of Refuge, Book 1) (Love Inspired #430) (Mass Market Paperback)
I just turned the last page on A Soldier's Promise and enjoyed every minute of it. Cheryl Wyatt launches her characters into a freefall toward love and no matter how hard they try, they just can't stop themselves from falling head over heels in love. Joel and Amber's story, with a cute kid thown in for good measure, is an emotional skydive you don't want to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Story I loved!!!!!!!!!!, January 15, 2008
This review is from: A Soldier's Promise (Wings of Refuge, Book 1) (Love Inspired #430) (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved A Soldier's Promise. That sweet man, so conflicted and hurt, but so honorable and kind. And the teacher trying to do right by her little student.
The thing is, we always know, if we're reading a romance that it's gonna be happily every after, right? But Cheryl Wyatt set this book up so we just didn't know, sure the hero and heroine would find a way to be together, but there was more at stake than them and Wyatt didn't necessarily give us all the easy answer, or then again, maybe she did. I'm not telling. But I PROMISE she's going to give you a story that's going to be hard to put down. I now that because I didn't get to bed last night until one a.m. And it's not like I just was determined to find out what happened and I defied good sense.
Oh, no, Cheryl is sneakier than that. I just read and read and read. Then I put the book down and saw the clock. I was all the way gone into A Soldier's Promise. A beautiful story.

I loved this debut novel by Cheryl Wyatt. It was a touching story with lovable characters. It's also a book that makes you laugh as well as cry--which for me is the sign of a great book. Definitely an inspiring story with laugh out loud moments. I highly recommend this book. And I really look forward to Cheryl Wyatt's next Love Inspired book due out in March!

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor + romance = a great debut book, December 28, 2007
This review is from: A Soldier's Promise (Wings of Refuge, Book 1) (Love Inspired #430) (Mass Market Paperback)
Romance, adventure and humor collide in this memorable debut novel from author Cheryl Wyatt.

Special ed teacher Amber Stanton has a special place in her heart for a student, Bradley, who is battling leukemia. When a visit from non-profit organization Dream Corps brings a Special Forces soldier into both of their lives, Amber takes a leap of faith and opens the lines of communication, and her heart.

Little did pararescue jumper Joel Montgomery know that diving out of a plane in spite of his dislike for his hometown would land him in a relationship with the sweet and funny Amber. There's a reason Joel hasn't visited Refuge in years - being there dredges up painful memories best left buried in his past.

Can Joel reconcile his past or will he lose his future with Amber? Will Amber find love again?

This book packs a doozy of humor and romance into a small package. Cheryl has a way with witty repartee and it shows in almost every line of dialogue.

Favorite things about this book:

Humor. Cheryl has a great sense of humor (see her blog) that shines through almost every scene in this book. Her quirky heroine gets the brunt of Cheryl's humor, which results in funny situations that will keep you in stitches.

Dialogue. Cheryl does a great job of making the dialogue lively, fun, and snappy. Not to mention funny. You will definitely be entertained with this book.

Inspirational message. Cheryl brings home the idea of forgiving those who've wronged you and overcoming your fears to attain something that will bring you so much joy. She really handles the inspirational message with a gentle touch and it works.

Other things to love about this book:

Supporting characters
Romance
Did I mention the humor?
Unique background for Joel

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Absorbing,It Held Me Captive!, January 28, 2011
A Soldier's Promise had me hooked from the first few pages. This is one of those books that you cannot bear to put down,or can't wait to get back to,if you have no choice but to leave it. Amazing character development. I felt like I was personally involved with the three lead characters,so I just had to see this story through. Plus all three are wonderful people anyone would love in their life or they remind you of some loved ones you have had or do have in your life. Raised as an AF dependent and married a G.I. I have definitely known great guys like this. Hope Cheryl will write more soldier's romances, and other authors too. There are lots of military brides out there who would love to see their heroes in stories they can enjoy.
