Book Description

March 1, 2006
More than 11 million women run regularly, a number that's growing every year. They tend to be educated and affluent-the perfect audience for Sole Sisters.

Half of all runners are women, and they are changing the face of the sport. It's a social outlet, a healthful way to improve mental well-being, and an opportunity to form bonds with like-minded women.

Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running is a gripping collection of stories that captures the inspirational heart of the women's running. Authors Jennifer Lin and Susan Warner have interviewed women of all ages from all walks of life and all parts of the country. All of their subjects have one thing in common: Running has transformed them. There are both heartrending stories of grief and survival and lighthearted tales of friendship. Among them are:

* Sisters who competed in a 5K race to honor a sister who survived breast cancer.

* A 9/11 widow who ran her first marathon to honor the memory of her husband.

* A 65-year-old woman who overcame obesity and alcoholism to finish the grueling Ironman triathlon.

* An unknown runner from Norway named Grete Waitz who decided to run a marathon-and changed the face of the sport.

Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running is not just for women who run. It appeals to all women who know what it means to have the support of others who share their trials and triumphs. Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running is sometimes touching, sometimes funny, and always inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gold coins, September 4, 2006

The vignettes within this book are poignant, touching, and downright real. One of my running friends handed this to me after a 12-mile Sunday morning trek, one (which like many others) allowed us to vent, analyze, and think about our lives. Reading this compilation truly drew me in, both as a runner and a woman. But don't let the chick peg fool you. My husband, who's been a runner for more than 25 years, picked it up and agreed: This is some solid, effective writing that rewards its readers with gold coins throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars The soul of Sole Sisters, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running (Paperback)

This book is about women runners, but also about so much more, touching on themes that resonate with us all: family, faith, remembrance, hope. Elegantly written and in places quite moving, Sole Sisters takes us into the lives of 21 women or women's running groups. Some of the people define themselves through running while others find it an important adjunct to their lives, the place where they find renewal or even peace. Among the women we meet are a 9-11 widow who runs her first marathon to honor her lost husband, and an American Indian teenager who feels the spirits of her ancestors running beside her. The authors, both avid runners and veteran news reporters, know their material and tell a compelling story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow--powerful stuff!, March 17, 2006
By
Learner (Allentown, Pa.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running (Paperback)
I never would've thought a book about running could pack an emotional punch, but this one sure does. This isn't a training book or guide to racing. It's about everyday runners -- a bunch of short chapters about women whose lives have gone through some kind of upheaval, and how running helped pull them through. But it's also upbeat -- you find yourself rooting for these women, and laughing, and believe or not, even getting misty-eyed! I gave it to a friend and our running group is passing it around. It's a perfect gift for anyone who runs.
This is what running is all about.
