5.0 out of 5 stars How blind are we, as English speakers?
I couldn't get my breath at this CD. It has to be the most refreshing, the most inspirational, the most beutiful piece of work an artist has produced in the 90s. I didn't understand the lyrics the first time I heard them, I don't speak French. But the music and Obispo's voice carried me to places where my heart had never been before.

For a long time, I'd been looking for something refreshing, something unique, and in Pascal Obispo's Soledad I found both. It took me to the year 2000 to find it and that I am more than upset about. Then, when I decided to translate the lyrics, the CD took on even more meaning and even more depth. This guy is raw tallent beyond compare.

It's not heavy, if you like heavy, forget it. But if you're a lost soul, looking for the inspiration you lost a long time ago in this world of repetitive drum beats and monosyllic choruses - this is it. This is what you have been looking for.

Don't hesistate in buying this CD. The same goes for Obispo's later album, Superflu - both display a depth and understanding of what moves people musically which has been lost in a lot of the English speaking bands of today.

If we weren't so bigotted in the US and England, Pascal Obispo would be bigger than any male solo artist you care to name. These songs mean something, these songs are special.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best albums I have bought recently, July 7, 2000

A friend of mine made me listen to a live album by Obispo, which sounded alright. In the shop I had a quick listen to some tracks on this album, which sounded better. When I was able to really listen to it at home, I realised I had bought a world-class album. It is difficult to describe the style; it is certainly not latin, except for Soledad. Rock, jazz, dance, you can find anything on this album, but it is not just a random mix of styles. This is real quality music, maybe comparable to Massive Attack (but at the same time not comparable to anything else because it is just fantastic in its own way).

5.0 out of 5 stars Obispo at his best, June 16, 2000

This review is from: Soledad (Audio CD)
Being a fan of Obispo ever since his previous album "Un jour comme aujourd'hui" - featuring his hit song "Tombé pour elle" - I was surprised at this album. "Soledad" has a Latin sound. Having worked with some of the best French composers - Etienne Roda-Gil, Lionel Florence, Didier Golemanas, Patrice Guirao and Pierre Jaconelli - Pascal Obispo offers a music that is completely different from any of his previous albums. Don't get me wrong : on "Soledad" he still sings about life and love ! This is a beautiful album to listen to, lyrically and musically speaking. My favorite songs of this album are "Tue par amour" (for the music) and "Ce qu'on voit, allée Rimbaud" (for the lyrics).

5.0 out of 5 stars French beauty, November 28, 2001

Pascal Obispo has become one of the leading French artists in the last couple of years, and his latest album, "Soledad", has strenghten that position. He also became very successful in the surrounding countries (i. e. Switzerland, Belgium...) with this album. His talent is very unique, his strength is to combine traditional French "Chansons" kind of melodies with more modern rhythm arrangements (...I think he listened to Madonna's "Ray of light" album a lot....) and all underlayed by a 50 piece string orchestra. With this album, for the first time, he also experimented a bit with Spanish music, since his ancestors are actually from Spain.... and the sexy rhythms of the title track are just catching you and you just want to dance.... overall, this album is packed with his passion in music, you can hear that as well in his voice! All his previous albums are great too, but still, the highlight of his career is "Soledad"....

One of my hobbies is collecting foreign music even though I do not fully understand the languages. So-o, I have to rely on my gut feeling, and my ears, when I choose music. One thing I cannot resist are songs sung with passion!

Pascal Obispo has just such a singing style. He totally bowled me over. His passion in "Par Absence" for example, you can't help but pay attention!

My favorites (though there are NO losers in the batch): "Pas Besoin de Regrets"--cool guitar. "Soledad"--Frenchmen singing in Spanish is a favorite of mine! "Si et Seul'ment Seul"-seductive musical introduction and intense guitar riffs. "Variations sur le meme-tu Manques"--SEXY voice, great orchestration and a really catchy beat. (Crank It Up.)

He's wonderful. Excuse me while I go order another one of his CDs!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Different, July 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Soledad (Audio CD)
My first Obispo album was Superflu - I bought it after I met a guy from Paris who let me listen to it. This summer when I was in France I bought Soledad and was surprised by the techno-ish sound of it - very different from Superflu with its primarily pop-sounding music. A couple songs on this album sound similar to others of his, but Soledad is a nice variation for Obispo.

Pascal is a great artist and musician. His songs are soothing, calming, enticing, and just amazing. Like Superflu, Soledad is filled with great music. I just ordered Soledad and can't wait for it to arrive.
