I'm a big fan of most of Vintersorg's work, but for some reason his 2007 album Solens Rotter just didn't grab me. Maybe between Borknagar, Cronian and his solo work I have Vintersorg fatigue, or maybe it's the man's decision to abandon singing in English for his native Swedish. Whatever the reason, it took me a while to warm up to the album.
Solens Rotter is the sixth Vintersorg solo album, and sticks pretty close to the style laid down on the earlier releases. I suppose you call this music black metal, but it's as far removed from Dark Funeral and the ultra-Satanic stuff as you can possibly get. There are progressive elements, folk-like traditional Nordic elements, and of course Vintersorg's trademark vocals - both clean and growled. I assume the album is once again focused on nature and the cosmos, but with the lyrics in Swedish I'm only guessing. Solens Rotter may be the least accessible Vintersorg album in quite some time, but persistence definitely pays off. You get more out of this densely layered, multifaceted album each time you spin it. It's subtle and complex and while not as easy to get into as Cosmic Genesis (still my favorite Vintersorg release), it is as enjoyable on a different level. Naturally, fans of Borknagar and Cronian should get the most out of Vintersorg's solo albums, and Solens Rotter is no exception. If you're willing to give the album a few listens, I think your patience will pay off.

I'm a major fan of all of Vintersorg CDs, but this, their most recent, is my favorite. It has elements of symphonic prog, jazz and black metal. The production is immaculate, and the vocals are sung in Swedish, some clean, some death growls, all beautifully sung. In fact, along with Interpol's and Fintroll's latest CDs, this is my favorite album of 2007 (so far)!

The first track on this album is AMAZING. i love it. sadly, there's only about 2 others on the album that stick out and that you want to listen too. if you're someone like me who likes the entire albums, i'd say pass on this probably. but if you like buying individual songs, definitely get the first track, Dopt I En Jokelsjo
