Works great but noisy, December 19, 2008
This review is from: Soleus Air DP1-50-03 50-Pint Portable Energy Star Dehumidifier (Kitchen)
Pros: Pulls moisture out great; you can set the % humidity you want and it only runs when needed; automatic restart after power outage; common sense user controls and readouts; current humidity level readout.
Cons: Loud when in the same room with it
I bought this to replace a Kenmore that was not pulling moisture out of the air any more. After a very rainy summer, my 1800 sq ft finished basement had developed a bad case of mildew. The humidity level was at 90% when I first started the unit. After 2 days it had dropped to only 75%. By the end of 5 days it dropped to 55% running non stop. I had to leave for 2 weeks. When I got back the unit was off because the filter needed cleaning. It was simple to remove, clean and replace - only a 10 minute job (most of that was getting it dry). After reinserting the filter the unit automatically restarted at the levels I had set. Now that the humidity level has hit 50% (where I set it) the unit has shut off and rarely runs.
I cleaned the basement thouroughly when I first got the unit. The mildew has not come back, and the musty smell is gone.
The only thing left to see is if this unit will continue to work for a number of years.
Bottom line: Even though this unit is not quiet, I am very pleased with it's performance. I just hope it continues to work well for years.

Works now, but didn't ship well., April 24, 2009
This review is from: Soleus Air DP1-50-03 50-Pint Portable Energy Star Dehumidifier (Kitchen)
I'm on my third one of these. The first two didn't survive shipping with FedEx. Big hole in the side, etc. The third one Amazon had sent by UPS. It arrived fine. Part of the problem I think comes from how it is packaged. They place the dehumidifier on a piece of styrofoam and then put a box to cover the top and side. So one side is styrofoam only, and the other 5 sides are box only, no protective packaging materials. I've had it for about a month now. It is working great as a product. The first few days it filled the 50 pint bucket in a day. Now it takes about 2 days to fill. I imagine when the spring rain ends, it will go several days. The auto-shut off seems to work great, and the bucket is really easy to empty. No more "basement smell" to our basement.
Update: Aug 10, 2010
We've had this product for well over a year now. In spring, we were still pulling 1-2 buckets of water out a day, with no problems from the dehumidifier. We realized one night we should've hooked the hose up so that it drained right away, and we couldn't be happier. Let me be clear, we were happy with it before, but now that we have the drain running, we're just thrilled with this dehumidifier. It keeps our "cave-like" basement at 50% humidity all the time now. We'd suggest it to anyone. (I have no idea if they fixed the shipping problem yet, sorry.)

Quality is a crap shoot, and Customer Service is the Pits, September 30, 2009
This review is from: Soleus Air DP1-50-03 50-Pint Portable Energy Star Dehumidifier (Kitchen)
My purchasing experience with this unit and the company that makes it is all over the map. I'll try to be concise:
1. My unit did not draw moisure out of the air when it arrived.
2. It took ONE MONTH to receive a replacement from SoleusAir
3. Hysterically, the unit comes with a bright orange sheet in the box that says something like, "Don't return to the store if you have a problem, but contact the helpful staff at SoleusAir for assistance."
4. Calling SoleusAir is an exercise in futility. No one answers... ever! After you've waited on hold for 1/2 hour and finally hung up, someone will call you back (!) and then tell you to leave a message in someone's voicemail. Even though they called you, they don't want to actually talk to you!
5. The second unit that arrived - again, one month after I ordered - did work, and has been doing so since I plugged it in. It draws a lot of water out of the air, and is relatively quiet, depending on your fan setting. In general, it sounds like a fan, and the compressor noise is basically non-existent in comparison to the fan sound.
6. If it worked right away and/or the customer service was great, I would recommend this item, but we really owe it to the good companies to not buy from the companies that are bad. If I knew now what I knew then, I would not be giving a company like this my money.
7. If you don't believe in my philosophy and just have to have this item, then buy it directly from Amazon (and not a third party vendor) because at least with them, if the unit is defective when it arrives, they'll happily cross ship from their own stock and your hassle will be minimized.
